I could agree that our country has been "sold and bought" in a way--large corporations have an unacceptable amount of influence over the political process due to the wealth that they control.

Why would they want to ban guns to eliminate all of their customers?

Frankly. I can't think of any reason why anyone would need to purchase more than 2 firearms per year. I certainly can't think why one county in AZ would need over 800 gun dealers.

I wonder what the first recorded reference to "They're going to take away our guns! Any minute now!" in the US is.

Probably some time just after the War of Independence. Ain't gonna happen (which in my opinion is something of a pity).

Seriously, if somebody knows of a particularly early example of this trope (or tripe?) I'd be interested.

The US military already have ray guns that can pass through solid material and cook organic matter from the inside out, even if you have guns they can still wipe you out in horribly painful fashion before you even get to drag your lardy ass out the trailer.
