If the colonies had never unilaterally declared independence from Great Britain, then Americans would have gotten all of Britain's social advances earlier: slavery would have been abolished in the 1830s(the South would have been brutally outvoted) and Jim Crow would not have happened, for one, and Americans would have gotten universal health care in the 1940s. If that had happened, fundies would have been treated, and so had no influence, and so Ms. Schlussel would have been a rational human being.

Maybe, maybe not.
If the 13 colonies south of Canada hadn't broken away, the history of the world would have unfolded much differently than it has. Just off the top of my head, the French Revolution was inspired (when it was) by the US Revolution. If there were no French Revolution, European history would have been different than it was. Who knows, ultimately it might have meant the avoidance of both World Wars, and for whatever reason, avoided the issue of human rights (for non-white males) all together.
As for Jim Crow, we didn't force South Africa to practice apartheid, so just because Jim Crow might not have happened here, doesn't mean it wouldn't have happened elsewhere. You simply don't know.
