I also think calling them ‘the left’ is misleading — it is like referring to Republicans as conservatives when obviously they are not — but they have made it their practice to obscure any identification of themselves, so we are left without any word that defines them.
Who and what they really are is ‘the enemy.’ They are the enemy of man and God, of freedom and decency, of Western civilization and Christendom, and the enemies of logic and reality. They are the eternal rebels, but they are the victims of deception as deeply and as sadly as they are the practitioners of deceit.

Well, he's right. We are certainly *his* enemy.
(Inasmuch as there is a 'we', that is).
...referring to Republicans as conservatives when obviously they are not
They're mostly theocrats, but most definitely as conservative as they come.
He is right about one thing, that Democrats aren't "the left." More like the "slightly left of center."
However, Republicans aren't conservatives? How in the hell can he justify that?
Republicans aren't conservative?
Maybe if you weren't so focused upon labeling people, you'd see that everyone has the right to voice their opinions even if they disagree with you instead of writing them off as enemies.
@Doubting Thomas
Well, technically, they're "neo-liberals" when it comes to economic policy, i.e. deregulate the hell out of everything, and prosperity will magically trickle down upon all of us because markets are perfectly efficient and corporations want us to be well. (This nonsense wasn't true during the Reagan era, and it isn't true today).
I don't think Republicans deserve the title of "conservative", either. It used to be a respectable position, and in some parts of the world it still is (e.g. Britain). They've turned into a bunch of regressive reactionaries, King Knut-ing their way through history and making life a whole lot more difficult for progressives and sane people in general.
Anyway, don't obsess so much over labels. You have to gauge people by their behaviour, which is something that too few people do when it comes to politics. Everyone's looking for some banner to rally behind.
I just use the terms Progressive & Regressive and leave it at that, since the "Liberal/Conservative" dichotomy is different for each country, culture & time period.
THE LEFT:
PROGRESSIVE - Martin Luther King Jr., SPLC, PFAW, Susan B. Anthony, Socialism.
REGRESSIVE - Stokley Charmichael, The Weather Underground, The SLA, Andrea Dworkin, Communism (it's only Progressive on a small scale, like in a kibbutz or commune but as a Govt. system it won't work).
THE RIGHT
PROGRESSIVE - Pope John XXIII, Billy Graham (in recent years only), Dwight D. Eisenhower.
REGRESSIVE - Pope Benedict XVI, Jerry Falwell, George W Bush.
@ SpukiKitty:
Well, historically, the names 'left' and 'right' are just a side-effect of French Revolution. During their Convent meetings, people were sitting with their co-party members, on the left or right side of the hall.
Is he actually admitting that the Republicans are not conservative, but reactionary? Now we should really be afraid, as the only reason they're admitting this is because that doesn't affect their popularity at this point. That demonization of anyone who believes in equality is just the first step in their evil plans, and knowing Americans, they will just allow them to reach fruition. I really didn't want to say this, but if any political party is the enemy, it's the Republicans.
The left is the only reason your country is independent of Britain, you stupid fuck. The conservatives at the time certainly didn't want to become independent. That took free thinkers and the right is devoid of them.
The same applies for any progress made by the USA in the ensuing two and a half centuries.
I can't WTF this. The guy is off base, but not by a lot.
EDIT: Misread the statement, thought he was still talking about Repubs when he started talking about enemies.
A government without free expression of dissent is tyranny... but we know what you want, so long as you're on the receiving end. The fact that you can use "Christendom", a non-existent feudalistic political entity, and, "reality" in the same sentence proves that you have no idea what you're talking about.

John C. Wright"
Mars Curiosity landed perfectly. Your argument is invalid.
So basically you're too stupid to look up where the term 'the Left' comes from so you just go with the most moronic, hyperbolic alternative definition you can come up with? Yep, sounds like typical right winger 'logic'.
@SpukiKitty :
Actually, communism is the next step with socialism. It's basically the same thing, only there's no government and people live in communes (as in "Paris Commune" communes, not the hippie kind). So communism is actually the utopia socialism aims for. Stalinist USSR and North Korea? Not communist. China and Vietnam? Not communist either. Cuba? Mostly socialist.
Conservatives/Republicans (they're basically the same as far as I'm concerned) are the enemy of man (true), the enemy of freedom (true), lack any decency (partly true) and wouldn't know God if He came down and knocked them in the back of the head (true).
Please, the left are the ones who want freedom and equality for all, while the right wants to take away the rights of gays and women. As for god, you can't be the enemy of something that doesn't exist.
@ Jeff D.
How?
@Nagol
He said: "They are the enemy of man [...], of freedom and decency, of Western civilization [...], and the enemies of logic and reality."
Yeah, that sounds a lot like the current outlook of the US Republican party.
EDIT: Looks like I read things too quickly, I thought he was still talking about Repubs at that point... Mea Culpa.
Those who are generally in favor of equal rights, freedom of religion, freedom of speech and universal health care are the enemies of man, God, freedom and decency? Are you insane or just remarkably stupid?
I really think that this kind of rhetoric will backfire on itself, because it's just so extreme. Effective propaganda has to be more subtle, it has to insinuate and suggest.
I'd like to think it's only a minority that will buy this simplistic, manichean, "the liberals are evil" stuff.
Re: conservatism, see that video on Youtube where Noam Chomsky says he thinks he's one of the few conservatives around, because he believes in traditional values.
It's true that the American conservatives are mostly not "conservative" in the sense of wanting to conserve something, like the institutions of society which have stood the test of time. They seem to be mostly either market fundamentalists or religious fundamentalists. A major fault line in American conservatism is that these two things are contradictory. The unfettered market is not necessarily kind to traditional values, or religious values, and fundamentalist Christianity is not necessarily compatible with a free market, despite what some on the right say.
Probably the last American describable as a "conservative intellectual" was William F. Buckley. Now the American right consists of social darwinists, imperialist warmongers, religious nuts, and just straight-up plutocrats. They are radically right-wing rather than conservative in the Burkean sense.
The only enemies of reason and logic are the fundies. Well, perhaps the truthers, the conspiracy nutes, the anti-vaxers, the alternative medicine practitioners, hmmmm, the list is pretty long. The only friends of reason and logic are the skeptical atheists.
I'll just leave this here:
"Every day, here and at home, we are warned about 'the enemy'. But who is the enemy? Is it the alien? Well, we are all alien to one another. Is it the one who believes differently than we do? No. All no, my friends.
"The enemy is fear. The enemy is ignorance. The enemy is the one who tells you that you must hate that which is different, because, in the end, that hate will turn on you. And that same hate will destroy you."

"They are the enemy of man and God, of freedom and decency, of Western civilization"
Journalist: What do you think of western civilization?
Gandih: I think it would be a very good idea
"I also think calling them the left’ is misleading it is like referring to Republicans as conservatives when obviously they are not"
I'll say. Proof?:
"Who and what they really are is the enemy.’ They are the enemy of man and God, of freedom and decency, of Western civilization"
Abraham Lincoln. Who freed the slaves. One of the US's greatest presidents. So much so, he was memorialised in Washington DC. He was a Republican .
I love the smell of annihilared arguments - and right-wing fundie doublethink - in the morning. Smells like... Left -wing Superiority.
@ #1431392
Berny,
Thanks for bringing this up. I hate when people forget stuff like this.
Another one is when people try to say that the US was founded on Christian principles. If it had been we'd still be British, as the divine right of kings was still a widely held and accepted belief at that time.
Sadly, Mr. Wright will probably never acknowledge this and would probably attempt to argue the point were it ever brought up to him in real life.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
