[Obama] is post-religious: he took his family to a church where the religion seemed to be America-hatred.
Meh. Rev Wright is certainly hateful, but Obama's not the first one to go to hate-filled church. Most Republicans seem to go to one as well. The only difference is that Obama's was not white.
There are no biblical echoes in his speeches, as there have been in the speeches of so many presidents, left and right, and such other American leaders as Martin Luther King.
This isn't a bad thing, as not everyone in the US believes in the bible.
“Pandering to religious nuts” is the way PORGIs analyze such references. Another way to describe them is quintessentially American.
I'll actually accept this. While not every one does believe in the bible, a great majority do, and there are very few Americans who've never heard of it. Using biblical references is a quick way to be understood.
We are, after all, a biblical republic. The idea of America freedom, equality, democracy, and America as the promised landgrew straight out of the Bible.
Sorry, there is nothing in the bible regarding freedom, equality or democracy. Slavery is endorsed in the bible (read Philemon), equality is only before God, and even then, it's only after salvation. As for democracy, Jesus is your King, not your president.
Obama is the first American president to put all that stuff behind him.
No, he's really not. Thomas Jefferson spoke out against Christianity. John Adams did as well (I think), and I can't recall off hand if George Washington did or not.
As for American Zionism, American Exceptionalism, the city on a hillit is one part of the American creed that Obama simply rejects.
As well he should. These are very dangerous concepts that led us to invade Iraq for no reason, and are causing other countries to fear us. This fear (among other things) is what led to 9/11.
