An official from Missouri’s Republican Party on Monday defended Senate candidate Todd Akin after he suggested abortions should not be allowed in any case because victims of “legitimate” rape victims could not get pregnant.

GOP 4th Senate District Committeewoman Sharon Barnes told The New York Times “that abortion is never an option.”

In an interview with KTVI-TV over the weekend, Akin had said that “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,” referring to pregnancy after so-called “legitimate rape.”

Barnes “echoed Mr. Akin’s statement that very few rapes resulted in pregnancy,” according to the Times, and she added that “at that point, if God has chosen to bless this person with a life, you don’t kill it.”

“That’s more what I believe he was trying to state,” she insisted. “He just phrased it badly.”

During an interview with Akin on Monday, Fox News host Mike Huckabee noted that “forcible rapes” had created some “extraordinary people.”

“Ethel Waters, for example, was the result of a forcible rape,” Huckabee pointed out. “I used to work for James Robison back in the 1970s, he leads a large Christian organization. He, himself, was the result of a forcible rape.”

“And so I know it happens, and yet even from those horrible, horrible tragedies of rape, which are inexcusable and indefensible, life has come and sometimes, you know, those people are able to do extraordinary things.”

Giving a rape victim a child is "god's blessing"? FUCK YOUR FUCKING GOD.

I sometimes wish that I had the power to set people on fire with my hate. Then I would travel the nation as Hatey-Burney Man and deal out justice.

I would start with these fuckers right here.

Yes, great people may, can and have been born out of non-consensual relations.

The issue we push is that you are denying women a right to not have to be forced into bearing a child that they cannot physically, emotionally, financially (and any other -ally) support.

Then you go ahead and stigmatize the victim anyway and say that the child is their punishment for, in pretty much to broadest sense, being her own goddamn gender.

In short, actually die.

These people are utter scum. There really is no other way to say it. They have no compassion, no regard for anything except their obsessive need to fuck everybody else over.

I wish an amazing space alien invasion would happen....wiping out all tyrants, bigots & fundies while sparing the good & reasonable people.

That would make for a great story! Maybe I should write it!

GOP 4th Senate District Committeewoman Sharon Barnes told The New York Times “that abortion is never an option.”

I really, REALLY wish you got an ectopic pregnancy. THEN we'd see how strongly you believe that.

she added that “at that point, if God has chosen to bless this person with a life, you don’t kill it.”

Your God is fucking twisted. And then you wonder why people are leaving Christianity.

“And so I know it happens, and yet even from those horrible, horrible tragedies of rape, which are inexcusable and indefensible, life has come and sometimes, you know, those people are able to do extraordinary things.”

Sure, and it should always be the woman's choice. if she wants to keep a rape baby and raise it that's her call. But a woman shouldn't be FORCED to derail her entire life to raise a baby she never planned for (or in some cases never wanted, there are people that don't WANT kids). If a woman isn't ready for a child or doesn't want one chance are it won't "do extraordinary things". It's more likely they end up becoming criminals. The father being a criminal himself only increases that risk.

@SpukiKitty

Maybe that's why we're not getting a reply to the messages we send out and why the universe seems so devoid of life. The aliens think we're too moronic to reply back to us.

>>Barnes “echoed Mr. Akin’s statement that very few rapes resulted in pregnancy,”<<

32000 women per year in the US become pregnant as a result of rape. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0002937896701412

Integrating over the entire population, that means about one million women currently alive in this country have been raped and become pregnant as a result.

>>“That’s more what I believe he was trying to state,” she insisted. “He just phrased it badly.” <<

What you believe he was trying to say is irrelevant. What he actually said is impossible to defend. Don't try.

"An official from Missouri’s Republican Party on Monday defended Senate candidate Todd Akin after he suggested abortions should not be allowed in any case because victims of 'legitimate' rape victims could not get pregnant."

Did your parents not have "the talk" with you, or what? You seem to be confused as to how babies are conceived.

"In an interview with KTVI-TV over the weekend, Akin had said that 'the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,' referring to pregnancy after so-called 'legitimate rape.'"

I can't imagine what the hell you're talking about here.

"Barnes 'echoed Mr. Akin’s statement that very few rapes resulted in pregnancy,' according to the Times, and she added that 'at that point, if God has chosen to bless this person with a life, you don’t kill it.'"

So, rape is a blessing from god, is that it?

"'That’s more what I believe he was trying to state,' she insisted. 'He just phrased it badly.'"

You didn't do any better.

"During an interview with Akin on Monday, Fox News host Mike Huckabee noted that 'forcible rapes' had created some 'extraordinary people.'"

Forcible rapes? As opposed to the kind of rape where the woman consents to have sex with you, or what?

Do you people even know what rape is?

"'Ethel Waters, for example, was the result of a forcible rape,' Huckabee pointed out. 'I used to work for James Robison back in the 1970s, he leads a large Christian organization. He, himself, was the result of a forcible rape.'"

Oh, well then, by all means we should just tie naked women up on street corners so that passing men can have their way with them whenever the urge hits them. Rape laws will have to be abolished first, of course, but with your keen logical analysis of the problem I don't foresee that being any sort of problem after you've enlightened us as to the massive cultural benefits of rape.

"“That’s more what I believe he was trying to state,” she insisted. “He just phrased it badly.” "

That's exactly what he was trying to state. He thought it badly, before he had the first notion to open his mouth and say something.

What he said has been standard political correctness at least since the 1970s.

Remind me again how Christians are supposed to be the good guys?

Good guys don't think rape is a gift. Why should Christians get off easy for saying disgusting things like this?

I see dionysus has already made the ectopic pregnancy point: so Pro-Life they are willing to kill both mother and baby for their 'principles'.

“And so I know it happens, and yet even from those horrible, horrible tragedies of rape, which are inexcusable and indefensible, life has come and sometimes, you know, those people are able to do extraordinary things.”

So we should legalize rape so we aren't thwarting the next Einstein? It seems that the same people who whine about government taxes taking away our choice on how to spend our money see nothing wrong with taking away a woman's choice about whose baby she wants to carry and raise.

The most disgusting part is their insistence on different kinds of rape. They don't have the courage to simply state that they don't think it's "really rape" if the rapist is married to his victim or the victim was wearing a skirt that ends above the knee or the victim doesn't fight until her attacker kills her. Of all the vile, evil, people on the planet there are none more hateful than rape apologists. Make no mistake. These vile, evil, people are rape apologists and the world would be happier without them.

“That’s more what I believe he was trying to state,” she insisted. “He just phrased it badly.”

I am so tired of this stupid excuse. "Phrased it badly?" He spewed a completely wrong scientific "fact" about conception, which as a member of a congressional science committee he should have known was nonsense, and he spoke about "legitimate rape" as if some rapes ARE legitimate. This isn't bad phrasing, its a**ohlic and ignorant.

I will never understand what it takes to be monstrous enough to tell a woman who has just been raped and had the right to her body already violated, that she won't get those rights back until after the accidental baby is born.

That is just the lowest, most sickening thing, that can only be topped by trying to tell a little girl in the same situation she has to risk her future health because she was violated before she even knew what was going on.

WTF is wrong with the Right?

Okay, Barnes' justification is even worse than Akin's. Akin has the excuse of knowing squat-all about how human biology works. Barnes, though, is blatantly injecting superstition into the whole mess.

I wonder if it's still possible to nip this in the bud by putting doctors on camera who know what they're talking about to explain the birds and the bees and to provide actual statistics to back the facts up.

Just when I think "these people" coundn't get any stupider or more delusional or more hateful, they go & outdo themselves to reach unparalleled heights of idiocy. A small part of me is actually impressed; once the vomiting stops.

You're not singing from the same hymn sheet, messrs. Barnes & Fuckabee. Your precious Mitt 'Magic Pants' Romney condemned what Todd said. Senior figures in the Repubican party have said Akin should resign, for the good of their candidate's campaign. You want to disagree with your Fuhrer?!

'Rape is rape.'

-President Obama

...but hey, you want to hand Obama his 2nd term on a gold platter, and further help destroy the Repubican Party, you go right ahead. As if one of your ilk alienating half of your potential electorate wasn't bad enough, your defending what he said will only help the Democrats further.

Right-wing Fundamentalist Christians in the US. A crazy-train of a permanent loop of P.R. FAIL. And a traincrash that I'll get the beer & popcorn out to watch, come that night later this year, as - after their precious Mor(m)on concedes to Obama (no doubt after they use Akin's own words in their Romney-destroying campaign adverts: 'This is what the Repubicans believe'), the GOP commits socio-political seppuku. >:D

@SpukiKitty

It'd give any of L. Ron Hubbard's own literary arse gravy a run for it's money, least of all the "Left Behind" toilet paper. And I'd pay good money to have such Sci-Fi on my bookshelves. b^_^d

". . . if God has chosen to bless this person with a life . . ." But I thought the only acceptable place to raise a child is within the bounds of matrimony. But, I forget, the victim must marry her rapist.
