This is overly generous of the Muslim men, and most likely destabilizing. By being recklessly chivalrous, Saudi men are introducing a cancer to Saudi society.

If I were the governing forces in Saudi Arabia, I would export Saudi women who wanted to work to other countries; for example, flush the trouble makers into America or Britain and let them slave away.

I would then replace the unhappy exports with new imports who were happy with Saudi life.

I think the Saudi man’s inexperience with feminism has caused them to make a decision which will eventually destroy the Saudi family and bring misery to the entire country. This is a big mistake.

Actually, I think giving Saudi women the freedom to leave and live in a country where they're free to work and are (more or less) equal to men is a great idea. Of course, I'm looking at it from the women's point of view and not the men's like walking in hell2 is. If he wants to live in a place where women are totally subservient and are treated like property, then he should move to Saudi Arabia. "The Stepford Wives" was not a documentary.

I would be absolutely stunned if most Saudi men even understood the concept of chivalry, let alone applied it.

You do know that you don't just "export" people from a country, right? The recipient country might want some say in things.

Have you even ever been to the KSA? Wahhabis view women as nothing more than chattel. The fact they're building a COMPLETELY SEPARATE CITY just so women can actually work outside the home without being harrassed, spit on, and being called whores for daring to leave their homes speaks volumes about how Saudis treat their women.

The original article is worthy of this itself. It outright says that the women of the city will still need men to do the heavy lifting and the administration which will ultimately turn them into whores somehow.

I like that the Saudis are trying to find a way for women to support themselves which still follows their religious laws and cultural preconceptions. But it feels like a step in the wrong direction, like a novelty to show how the silly women can somehow maintain a society without male involvement, or a ghetto into which they can throw their more unruly women.

Nonetheless, this might have some benefits. It may be an excellent social experiment which feminists and the Muslim world would need to monitor. It may also prove to be a sanctuary of sorts for women who are oppressed by their families or by society as a whole.

Which direction the city follows would depend on the political climate of Saudi Arabia and how the city itself is governed. Perhaps it's just that I've been on this site so long that I have trouble believing that the more positive scenario will actually happen.
