Can someone please explain to me what the fuck this means? I've switched the emphasis from syllable to syllable and can not find a way to say this that makes it sound coherent.

HAART is a well-developed therapeutic regime, and takes AIDS from a fatal disease to being a chronic but manageable condition. The life expectancy of an other-wise healthy adult AIDS patient on HAART is almost the same as that of a person of the same age in the general population. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIDS#Prognosis Absent any other medical advances, if we can get transmission down to nearly zero, AIDS will eventually disappear. That would take many decades and keeping all the patients on the HAART drug regime for a long time is very expensive, so there is a huge research effort to find a true cure, rather than just managing the disease.

Besides, only ~1/2 of people with HIV in the US right now are men who had sex with men (not the same as their being gay). Most of the rest got the virus from heterosexual intercourse http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV/AIDS_in_the_United_States. Lesbians have the lowest rates of infection. Worldwide, just about as many women have HIV as men, because heterosexual and mother-to-child transmission dominates.

@motobreath: the 'functional cure' you mention was in a 40-year-old HIV-positive man who was given a bone-marrow stem-cell transplant to treat leukemia (unrelated to the HIV). The donor carried a genetic mutation that confers resistance to HIV. For at least three years after transplant, HIV levels in the patient's blood stream and bone marrow have been undetectable. The problem is that the virus may still be present in other tissues in his body. And his life expectancy is relatively low due to the transplant, although far longer than if he had had untreated leukemia. Bottom line: that particular HIV treatment is not readily scalable.

As a result of the Smallpox Eradication Program from 1950-80, the last person died from such in 1977. Smallpox now exists only in culture flasks in a number of labs around the world, with debate to this day in the scientific community about either keeping such for future virological research, or to destroy such, making a species of virus extinct.
