You are a liar.

HAART is a well-developed therapeutic regime, and takes AIDS from a fatal disease to being a chronic but manageable condition. The life expectancy of an other-wise healthy adult AIDS patient on HAART is almost the same as that of a person of the same age in the general population. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIDS#Prognosis Absent any other medical advances, if we can get transmission down to nearly zero, AIDS will eventually disappear. That would take many decades and keeping all the patients on the HAART drug regime for a long time is very expensive, so there is a huge research effort to find a true cure, rather than just managing the disease.

Besides, only ~1/2 of people with HIV in the US right now are men who had sex with men (not the same as their being gay). Most of the rest got the virus from heterosexual intercourse http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV/AIDS_in_the_United_States. Lesbians have the lowest rates of infection. Worldwide, just about as many women have HIV as men, because heterosexual and mother-to-child transmission dominates.

@motobreath: the 'functional cure' you mention was in a 40-year-old HIV-positive man who was given a bone-marrow stem-cell transplant to treat leukemia (unrelated to the HIV). The donor carried a genetic mutation that confers resistance to HIV. For at least three years after transplant, HIV levels in the patient's blood stream and bone marrow have been undetectable. The problem is that the virus may still be present in other tissues in his body. And his life expectancy is relatively low due to the transplant, although far longer than if he had had untreated leukemia. Bottom line: that particular HIV treatment is not readily scalable.

They once said the same about that ol' Biblical favourite, Leprosy. Easily cured these days. A disease far more lethal than Leprosy? Smallpox. As a result of the Smallpox Eradication Program from 1950-80, the last person died from such in 1977. Smallpox now exists only in culture flasks in a number of labs around the world, with debate to this day in the scientific community about either keeping such for future virological research, or to destroy such, making a species of virus extinct.

The high mutability of HIV makes a vaccine almost impossible. However with its very specific attack vector on the T cells of the immune system it opens the door for other possible as yet undiscovered treatments by perhaps using a gene therapy to make the T cells immune or some other solution.

Our Current problem is that despite current treatments essentially clearing the bloodstream of the virus, there are still cells carrying a viral load that the treatment does not deal with. Hence when treatment is stopped those cells burst and release their viral load and the bloodstream becomes full of the virus again.

One proposed strategy is to use the current treatments as is, and focus on finding a way to eliminate the viral reservoirs hidden within the cells. A two pronged attack that should over time clear out a persons system of the virus. It also has potential, if it works to be modified and applied to other viruses.

The problem with that idea is that the CCR5-delta-32 mutation only confers resistance to some HIV strains (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CCR5#CCR5-.CE.9432). Those strains happen to be the most common right now, but if transmission remains as high as it is, then deploying a treatment based around CCR5-delta-32 would only be a temporary solution - the other strains of HIV would come to dominate population.

Basically, there is no single trick to killing HIV completely in the near-term. In addition to HAART (to keep current patients alive) and any further medical breakthroughs, transmission has to be brought down.

And given the difficulty of making an effective vaccine, bringing transmission down is a social problem, of getting people to get tested and to avoid infecting others. This is particularly important in Southern and Eastern Africa, where unsafe blood transfusions, dirty needles, women being sexually exploited, and poor sex ed are disturbingly common. For the last, witness the AIDS denialist policies of the Mbeki government in South Africa and the total lack of knowledge of the disease exhibited by Jacob Zuma, the current South African president.

First, it's not a mental disorder. It got declassified as one because it is not harmful to the "afflicted" nor does it impede their...our...ability to live a long, happy life, asshats like you notwithstanding. And it doesn't encourage kids to be gay anymore than teaching them that women are people too makes them want to grow a vagina.

Really? I'm pretty sure it's a minor increase, and that's more because anal sex does facilitate pathogen transmission, and nothing more. Not to mention that lesbians experience a fraction of STDs that any male involved sex has, and guess what? It's because there is far less fluid transfer between the partners. So your God chooses an inefficient means of transmitting his righteous fury, missing HALF of the people he's allegedly opposed to. And you know what? Condoms mitigate that risk, almost entirely. Hear that? Your God's wrath is trumped by a sheet of latex.
