The paternalistic, misogynistic, agrarian division of property and lands in the society in Biblical times MAY have made sense - for that time and place. However, in today's urban, technological society in which a woman has as much ability to support herself as any man, it is foolish and unworkable - except to misogynistic fundies whose self-worth is so low that they cannot exist unless they see themselves as undisputed lord and master of their house. These are the 5'1" guys who drive the enormous 4x4 pickup trucks on the streets of New York and Philadelphia and any other big city. Trucks that have never seen a dirt road. Can you say compensation???

Hang on, this guy is saying that in order to show that single parenthood is undesirable we need to deliberately make it so?

>> Thus, a man did not have to trust his wife
There it is. This guy doesn't trust his wife, assuming there is one, and wants to manufacture a reason for that to be normal. Personally, can't imagine a marriage like that.

So, this guy is willing to allow the children of current single mothers to suffer in poverty in order to FORCE his preconceptions of this to be true? Leaving aside the fact that it's a self fulfilling prophecy then... what a vicious ass.

Maybe the reason you can't trust women not to break up with you because you're a misogynistic tool that no woman with self-respect would want to be around.

Dale, you are quite the idiot. You know, I have no father. At least I only know him through court, where we met because he failed to support my mother and me. He is part-time alcoholic, regularly cleared his throat and my parents' shared bank account in a single swoop. And you are saying my mother should have stayed with him? Even after he left her for her best friend? Also, I don't know what's wrong with being raised without a father. I'm educated, ambitious, well-mannered and still am enough of a man to not be considered a sissy, quite the opposite.

As a child raised by a single mother whose attempts to bring a "needed" father figure into my life all ended in unspeakable ways I would like to say something:
Fuck you.
I will leave you shitting teeth if you ever say any of that to my face. You think it would have been better that I be thrown to the wolves? You think the drunken, physically, mentally, and one very nearly sexually abusive cocksucking assholes would have been a more appropriate influence on me than my mother?
Let me tell you about one particular piece of shit she brought home to complete the family unit. He ran out on a previous marriage, beat his former wife and two sons, and would lock me in a basement after pulling out the lightbulbs.
That is the kind of man you would kiss on the damned mouth while tossing his wife and the two profoundly screwed up bastards he left behind in a gutter.
That man by the way? He's dead. He haunted my nightmares for nearly a decade after and my only regret is that I never killed him myself when I was that scared little boy he beat to a pulp the first time I told him he had no right to keep me a prisoner in my own home. Or the last time I told him.
I could hate my mother very easily for bringing him into my life, but I don't. I could hate her for being so focused on the image of a perfect familly that it made her willfully blind to the things he did to me in the name of 'discipline' but I don't. So help me I wish I could be furious but I just can't. What I hate is people like you who put the idea in her head that it would have been unnatural or impossible to raise me herself and that it is better we suffered the boot of a mad manchild than try. If you had your way I suppose even that hell would have been a step up as you would have her on the street and shunned by neighbours, employers, and even family until we both died or succumbed to a life of violent crime.
I'll say it again: fuck you.

"Every time we subsidize a single parent, we show other people that single parent-hood isn’t all that bad, what with all the help you will get."
Obviously you've never actually tried it or you wouldn't say something so utterly foolish.
"Yes, the reality may be that even with government assistance, it is difficult."
I'm pretty sure that "difficult" would be on the bottom of the scale. The reality is probably closer to "damn near impossible, so fuck you."
"I think it is better to do what will prevent 10 new children being created for life in a deficient home than help the 1 child already there."
I assume you're all pro-life and against proper sex education and easy access to birth control though, right?
"It is interesting to me that when God set up the economic system in Israel (about 1500 B.C.), women were not permitted to inherit the family land/farm, except in the case where there were 0 sons. ALL property of the father went to his sons. If he has 1 son and 10 daughters, the 1 son gets everything."
And yet Israel was a largely poor place to live unless you were part of specific strata of society whereas in Greek Sparta women would often inherit property of various sorts, even businesses, despite having brothers and would be unquestioned in running them. Sparta, as I'm sure you're aware, was quite successful in pretty much all areas of culture.
"Which brings the point that, in order to continue to receive the benefits of marriage (home, food, clothing), the female had to remain a wife. Thus, a man did not have to trust his wife to not divorce him — she had the financial, daily motivation to remain with him."
And this is supposed to be a good thing in your opinion?

Passerby, I am profoundly sorry for what you went through and are still going through. Nothing really unhappens the past, but at least you are always getting further away from it. But it helps to put a tarp down at the base of a masonry wall and then smash glass bottles against it.

Thanks for saying that, but it's okay. Nobody should have to go through that kind of crap but I realize it helped make me the man I am today and can take some comfort in the fact I am significantly less of a douchebag than I could be without the empathy and slightly broader perspective it helped me develop.
Could have been worse, I could have been driven completely insane instead of just mostly. Or worse than that I may not have that one regret I mentioned after all.
Ah well forget it. Didn't really mean to air out that much of my personal life but what's done is done.

What's up with this rash of infuriating misogyny lately?
I'm glad that I didn't grow up like that but it is unthinkable that you would encourage that. You, Dale, are a sad excuse for a man. Go roll around in some toxic waste.

"It is interesting to me that when God set up the economic system in Israel (about 1500 B.C.)"
Just about every other civilisation at that time had a better and more productive economy. The Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Babylonians, Assyrians, etc etc were all richer and more powerful than the hebrews hence the constant invasions and occupations.
Maybe god should stick to religion and stay away from economics since he doesn't appear to be very good at it.

In ancient Israel, a wife had no right of divorce. She couldn't divorce her husband. Only a husband had the righr of divorce.

Ok Dale, what about single fathers? Or the wives who husbands leave them for another woman (or in some cases a man)?

Every time we subsidize a single parent, we show other people that single parent-hood isn’t all that bad, what with all the help you will get. So let her little bastard starve to death or die for lack of medical care. That'll teach her!
Pro-life before birth; kick 'em to the curb after birth.

So, a woman who has been left alone to care for the children should be punished by society as well as by her former husband? How very compassionate of you, you could stand in for the Good Samaritan any day...
What about financial, daily motivation for the husband to be faithful and loving to his wife? Where does that come into your little story?
The best way to limit the number of single mothers is to have free (or cheap) easily available contraceptions and abortions.

As a friend to someone who's mother was raped (resulting in him being conceived) and subsequently declared "damaged goods" by just about everyone at the time, may I ask just why she and her son should be punished for the actions of others?
Oh right... if she got raped, she was a promiscuous woman...
