Quote# 89874

AUDIENCE MEMBER: You voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Why do you think it is okay for a woman to be paid less for doing the same work as a man?

AKIN: Well, first of all, the premise of your question is that I’m making that particular distinction. I believe in free enterprise. I don’t think the government should be telling people what you pay and what you don’t pay. I think it’s about freedom. If someone what’s to hire somebody and they agree on a salary, that’s fine, however it wants to work. So, the government sticking its nose into all kinds of things has gotten us into huge trouble.

It's not about freedom, it's about social darwinism, meathead!

Why do these people bother becoming members of the government if they believe the government's job is to basically sit around and do nothing?

10/3/2012 3:40:18 AM

Paler_Face

@Filin De Blanc

So they can just sit around and do nothing while getting paid for it, duh!

10/3/2012 3:54:50 AM

UHM

Well, that would work - if the employees had a chance to choose…

@Paler_Face: Truly parasitic.

Translation: "We already screw every employee equally. No need to change that through legislation."

This man really hates women.

"So, the government sticking its nose into all kinds of things has gotten us into huge trouble."

Indeed, like the government (or parts of it) wanting to decide what gender you can marry, and what to do with unwanted parasites squatting in your body.

"@Filin De Blanc

Okay, but why do people continue voting for them? Whenever a politician goes on about how government shouldn't be interfering in businesses or healthcare or whatever, they're essentially saying "vote for me, and I'll make money off of you while not actually doing a damn thing". How are people so stupid that they support this man?

How is this fundy? Is everything to the right of the Huffington Post now fundy?

10/3/2012 4:22:50 AM

Filin De Blanc

"How is this fundy? Is everything to the right of the Huffington Post now fundy?"

It's fundy because Akin is claiming that ensuring equal rights is not the government's job (while at the same time claiming that stopping women from having abortions is).

Our Sexists Say the Darnedest Things is long overdue.

@Filin De Blanc

Because they bought the rubbish of a slogan: "That government is best which governs least"

Stupid people love slogans.

Stop abusing the word "fundie". Words have a meaning, and this is not fundie in any meaningful way. It is also not against women; it is merely the logical consequence if you think that all contracts should be voluntary (I don't, for the record). It is damaging to women in effect, not in intention. If one consistently held that position, you could substitute women with any other group.

"So, the government sticking its nose into all kinds of things has gotten us into huge trouble."

Except when your government is sticking its nose into an American citizens vagina.

Edit: OhJohn No:
You're a little dated. See if you can find something around mid september 2008.

Does this fucker not know what happened last time laissez-faire economics was government policy?

Just when you think Akin's hit bottom, someone throws him a shovel.

"The freedom to extend my fist ends at your face?! THAT'S GOVERNMENT OPPRESSION!"

So, in other words, if everybody pays women less than men so that women have no choice but to accept lower pay, you don't have a problem with it?

Typical greedy-ass, misogynistic Republican.

So, the government sticking its nose into all kinds of things has gotten us into huge trouble.

But you're apparently perfectly fine with the government sticking its nose into whether gay people can marry each other, or if women have abortions even if it's a "legitimate" rape.

This is what this means in practice:
1. Pay 10 year olds 12 cents an hour.
2. Sell product for $9.99.
3. ......
4. PROFIT!

Okay, so if every major company decides to pay fundamentalist Christians $.02 per hour and because of that fundamentalist Christians (rightfully) refuse to work for such low wages and because of the competitive nature of the market the jobs are quickly filled by non-fundamentalist Christians you'd be okay with that? Or what if we decided to let the market decide YOUR pay. Have your pay be based on how much people like you, which is to say not at all.

and also totally fair when many companies make discussing compensation a fireable offense....

Is this a recent quote? Has this man learned nothing?!

He's approaching Newt Gingrich level misogyny. And understanding of economics.

He claims he thinks it's about freedom...for him.

So most people here think the government should be telling people what you pay and what you don't pay.

Got it.

I wonder how many of you have taken a course in basic economics.
