Today, I took a female cat to be fixed. For the exact same procedures, it cost $80, plus $13 for pain meds.

...on the other hand, here in the UK, there's the veterinary charity, the PDSA: People's Dispensary for Sick Animals.

Where those who can't afford vets bills can take their pets for treatment; usually, said person then makes a donation, as much as they can afford.

The PDSA actively encourages the neutering of cats.

This is brilliantly stupid. I know fundies are generally ignorant of sex, but...

Vas deferens != ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus
Vasectomy != hysterectomy
Mild pain relief (for vasectomy) != general anaesthetic (for hysterectomy)

I also live in Australia, and having had several dogs and cats of both sexes fixed, I'd say spaying is about double the price of neutering. And of course anaesthesia also costs.

Also, they don't tie tubes for animals - at least not here. When you get a female fixed, they perform a complete histerectomy. Tying tubes would still be more invasive and expensive than a vasectomy.
