Unlike most the flags of most nations, the Swiss flag is square instead of rectangular. Therefore, it would be harder to place an image on it that is more pleasing to Muslims, such as a plane flying into a building or one figure beheading another.

From a quick Google search for German language sources it seems the Swiss media slightly overblew this. The only thing most of them quoted was the head of an immigrant organization Second@s Plus saying the Swiss flag wasn't "timely" any more, the German translation of this can easily be understood as "should be changed" (as we like to stay modern and with the times). The organization and the head of it have denied actually wanting to change the flag, and have resorted to saying they respect the cultural history of Switzerland but that it has become a much more multicultural country.

But a Crescent moon is a descent symbol to put on the flag regardless of religion. I think I should put it on the flag of one of my Sci-fi nations.

The world in German is pretty interesting (zeitgemäss), which means it simply does not correspond to present time.
Duh, of course, it is an heritage.

Really I can't find a lot of fault with this quote. Some Muslims did celebrate 9/11, and some of them have beheaded people. Yes, I understand the racism of stereotyping all of them as being in favor of terrorism or beheadings, but is this really so much worse than us making fun of right-wing Americans because some of them say, "Let's nuke Mecca!"?

switzerland is a secular nation. the "cross on their flag is no more offensive, and no more a "cross" than an addition symbol. all sides should suck it up and let it go.
