Britain risks becoming a totalitarian state as a result of gay marriage and could go the way of Nazi Germany, Tory opponents of the government's plans have heard.

Addressing an anti-gay marriage rally in Birmingham Town Hall on the fringes of the Tory Party conference on Monday, the former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey said Christians had so far been "too timid" in their opposition to the government's plans.

He also warned that those of faith could even begin to experience the persecution endured by the Jews in Nazi Germany if they dared to speak out if same-sex marriage laws were passed.

"Remember that the Jews in Nazi Germany, what started it against them was when they were called names, that was the first stage towards that totalitarian state," he said.

He added: "It's part of a slippery slope where the unintended consequences could be shocking."

Lord Carey said politicians were trying to "plunder" the institution of marriage. "It's like annexing what was regarded as specific to make and female relationships."

He added: "Same sex relationships are not the same as heterosexual relationships and should not be put on the same level."

Along with the other speakers including former shadow home secretary Ann Widdecombe and current backbench Tory MP David Burrows, Lord Carey took exception to the 'Coalition4Marriage' campaign being called "bigots".

Senility shouldn't be laughed at. This man is to be pitied and hospitalised for his own good.

So basically, the law shouldn't allow anyone to do anything, because there's a risk that this will lead to persecution of the people opposed to that thing.

Because recognizing civil marriage between two consenting adults who are of the same gender is EXACTLY the same as murdering millions of people in gas chambers. Right...

Carey, not only are you an idiot and a bigot, you're also irrelevant. And that goes for you, too, Sacks.

I've lived in England all my life and I wasn't aware that the Anglican church actually believed in anything so this is a surprise. And Mr Carey has roped in Ann widdecombe, who turned Catholic when women were ordained into the Anglican church and whose rutheless self publicity even saw her making a fool of herself on reality TV shows.

The fact that this is a retired bishop and a failed MP speaks volumes. Is this really the best team that their god can come up with?

Your argument is invalid. And not even senility is valid justification - least of all an 'excuse' - for so much as thinking in that way. Try telling the survivors of the Holocaust - homosexual or not - that it is. 'Bigotry'? You know nothing of that word, or what it entails, least of all how it affects people (i.e. you - or not in your case, other than not having the right to be bigoted to anyone you just don't happen to like), therefore you don't have the right to even think in such a way.

Moral: When you've been the target of discrimination, ghettoisation, been stripped of your property & assets, then put in concentration camps, and reduced to nothing more than slave labourers; beaten, tortured, experimented upon, then ultimately gassed & incinerated, get back to me, 'Lard' (Mariah) Carey. But until then, STFU and keep dribbling in front of the TV, whilst "Countdown" is on, interspersed with adverts for Stannah Stairlifts, and Michael Parkinson promoting the AXA/Sun Life Assurance 'Over-50s Plan' (pay in monthly instalments for your own funeral costs).

The Nazis actually put gays into camps.

This would be the same 65yo, never married, virgin, Ann Widdicombe.

If you don't play the game you don't get to make the rules.

Gays were rounded up by Christians and put in concentration camps in Nazi Germany. The gays were forced to wear pink triangles.

You know who's been called names by Christians for centuries? The gays, that's who. I guess we are already in the Christian totalitarian state, then...

What's specific to "make" and female relationships? Anything beside having one male and one female?
Same sex relationships have two males or two females, so they are not even the same as each other.
No reason not to put them "on the same level" though. Level of what, btw?

If you don't want to be called bigots, then don't act like bigots. Easy-peasy!

He added: "It's part of a slippery slope where the unintended consequences could be shocking."

He even admits he's using logical fallacies! Though I'm sure he doesn't recognize slippery slope as a fallacy, and most of the people who would listen to him wouldn't recognize a fallacy as an easily-discredited argument.

"It's like annexing what was regarded as specific to make and female relationships."

Annex:
1. To append or attach, especially to a larger or more significant thing.
2. To incorporate (territory) into an existing political unit such as a country, state, county, or city.
3. To add or attach, as an attribute, condition, or consequence.

Yes, gay marriage is going to add gay men and lesbians to the institution of marriage. Gay marriage is not going to steal marriage from straight people, because that's (a) impossible and (b) ridiculous.

Now, if you're serious about defending marriage, attack divorce. That's the real threat.

This lot are harmless, sad as fuck, and not worth bothering about. I am a bit shocked by the stupid, historically ironic Godwin by Carey, though.

I find it endlessly hilarious that these religious douchebags can't figure out why their religion is becoming less and less relevant to today's society when one of the reasons is because they make stupid comments like this and expect everyone to take them seriously.

Compared to some of the statements I've seen on this site alone makes this amount of crazy look mild.

Is dumb for bringing up the idea that tolerance will lead to Nazi Germany. Because Intolerance was the name of their game. Of any totalarian state's first goal is to make an enemy within to increase their power. To galvanize support. Intolerance is part of the control playbook.

I, for one, know that Tolerance is the key for a truely free society.

What's your point? Gays are driving the UK into totalitarianism by allowing themselves to be called names?

Uh...what started it against them was they rebelled against the Roman Empire in the first century. And then the Christian conversion around the turn of the fourth century meant all the volumes of holy book they'd devoted to lambasting themselves for failure to live up to religious ideals were read rather differently by outsiders, and the Jesus myth was reinterpreted in a non-Jewish context, and...

And then the Jews were insular and xenophobic so as to maintain their existence as a separate people post-diaspora, and then they occupied a many-faceted outsider role in European sociology for centuries. And then the Holocaust.

It did not start with name-calling. The French were massacring them on suspicion of well-poisoning six hundred years before that.

You have a long way to go before you are comparable to early twentieth-century Judaism. But you could be taking the first steps on that road, if you work hard enough at alienating the majority of the population! Good luck! :D
