Republican Congressman Joe Walsh of Illinois said after his Thursday debate against Democratic rival Tammy Duckworth that abortions are never necessary to save a pregnant woman's life, because modern technology has eliminated the risks of childbearing.
Walsh was defending his position that abortion should be outlawed with no exceptions, which is also the Republican Party's official stance on the issue.
"With modern technology and science, you can't find one instance" of a pregnant woman's life being at risk, he told reporters after the debate. "There is no such exception as life of the mother, and as far as health of the mother, same thing." He added that "advances in science and technology" meant that abortion is never necessary for the health of a mother.

Ectopic pregnancy, beeotch.
Just be glad, Joe, that you'll never experience the possibility.
How do people like this get in power? Especially in a blue state like Illinois? And if I recall correctly he's not the rep of some bumblefuck area of southern Illinois, he represents a district near Chicago. How the hell does someone whose ideology wouldn't seem out of place in the deepest reaches of Alabama get elected in liberal Chicagoland?
We don't live in a science-fiction novel, Representative. What are you the representative of anyways, people who live in Lala-land, Illinois?
Bullshit. Modern technology (which ironically works far better than prayer) has vastly improved the life expectancies of expectant mothers and babies, but we still have not totally eliminated all risks to the mother.
Another stupid politician who makes me weep for our country. It will be a sad four years if Republicans win the presidency, House, and Senate.
Really? Really?
Gestational diabetes still happens. Placenta praevia still happens. Amnotic fluid embolisms still happen. Anemia still happens.
If I get pregnant, I'll automatically be considered a high risk pregnancy due to my PCOS, and said pregnancy, in theory, could cause me severe harm or possibly even kill me.
Fuck you.
You want to become another Todd Akin, Joey-boy, far be it from me to stop you.
Just remember how the sane people in the Repubican party - even Mitt Romney - dropped him, as if (and just as fast as) they'd discovered a skidmark on a towel.
To say nothing of Akin instantly alienating half of his potential electorate. PROTIP: Women - as of the early 20th Century - have the right to vote , you know. How to Lose Friends and Alienate people indeed.
Just as the advances in automotive design ha made speed limits, seatbelts, DUI enforcement, etc., unnecessary...
Oh, wait...

And nobody gets cancer either, I suppose.
Btw, this "science and technology" you speak of, is that the same science and technology you hate so much and you are doing everything in your power to make sure doesn't get funded?
Wow.
He's so full of BS, that the commentators on Yahoo are actually being reasonable and civil .
And the conservative commentators are calling him out on his BS, and getting along with the liberals . ON YAHOO.
I'm fairly certain that's the final of the Apocalypse.
Advances in science and technology also mean that the risk of dying in a car crash has been eliminated. Or, ya know, not... Thousands of people still die in car crashes, and thousands of women still die during childbearing (at least 1000 women per day, worldwide).
When you have outlawed the death penalty, guns and wars, then we can talk about abortions, OK.
Walsh is the slimeball who fell $117,437 behind in child support, did not show up for a hearing because he's a U.S. congressman (his lawyer said), and defended himself by saying he's part of "real America."
Name one. Name these advances and how they eliminate the need for abortion.
This is the kind of rhetoric we need to look out for. If someone has researched the issue, has the facts on their side they can cite papers to back those facts. When someone doesn't, they insinuate facts that aren't there with vague statements like this.
By the way I actually looked up what an entropic pregnancy is. Let's see if you can spot the problem?

I want to visit a Republican planet for a few days; women are not at risk from their pregnancies, they don't mind second class citizenship, can kick back and enjoy rape, legitimate rape is just a wasted few minutes, minorities always bow and scrape, slavery is win/win welfare, roads are lined with renewable gold, education is something that goes to the highest bidder but not really important, and the sick deserve to die. What an interesting few days it would be on Republican planet.
I see, so all the sleepless nights I've spent in hospitals, trying to keep women suffering a complication of pregnancy from dying, were a waste of time. How unfortunate.
Did Mr walsh gain his obstetric qualification from the same institution from which Mr Hovind gained his 'doctorate'?
"advances in science and technology"
Uh oh, Joe, you're going to lose the fundy vote with that type of comment.
Illinois, if you end up electing Walsh over Duckworth, we're going to have to have some very harsh words.
Also, I like that the title of this page is Rep. Jow Walsh, Yahoo. That sounds just about right.

Holy shit, is this for real? How can these guys still keep their positions after shit like this and after they say such obvious bullshit lies?
Why isn’t their own party crying for the resignation of this guy, that Fuqua person or Todd Akin because they are ruining the public perception of the party?
Let's take a look at a chart, shall we?

I realize it isn't the US that appears in red, but I'm sure you can read well enough to see it appears way down at the bottom of the countries represented. It even gives a handy-dandy number to go with the US's global rank: 39. Gee, it sure looks like the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 people isn't zero and is, in fact, much higher than quite a few other developed countries. How could that be?
"Eliminated the risks of childbearing" my ass.
how about RH difference ? Not sure if that kills the mother or the infant.
Perhaps Joe should ask the government agency that keeps statistics for mortality rates in pregnancy and childbirth. If he is right than many lawsuits need to start for medical malpractice.
Confused?
