Before DADT and before homosexuality was no longer classified as a mental illness, homosexual behavior routinely resulted in discharges from the military. In conclusion, it always has been there in all military branches, even long before you were born.

You can google up Ernst Rohm, Hitler's SA deputy, but he was just one of several, and one of those that were known, as opposed to those that stayed in the closet e.g. latent homosexuals. Many more exist in literature, but I did not get that from links. I got all that info from pre-internet times i.e. hardcopy books.
