Romney didn't lie. This entire issue goes back to the Left's intentional misrepresentation, distortion, spin on such things as Mitt's 47% comment, and also Obama's " you didn't build that " remark. 2 specific instances where the Left absolutely inverts reality on its head, in order to trash ( or cover for ) a candidate by flipping what was said to mean the exact opposite.

Romney: There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. Yep. That's pretty damned clear, right there. He called 47% of Americans moochers. Didn't have to spin it at all.

I promise you it doesn't sound any better in context.

He all but called nearly half of the American people parasites. He seemed very comfortable with it and animated in a way he very rarely is in mixed company--those were HIS people he was talking to, the rich, powerful and well-to-do. It seemed to be something he felt very strongly about, that he thought was very important. Unlike you, I'm willing to take him at his word that he said what he meant and meant what he said, especially since he's said a lot of things before and since that strongly suggest that he'd like to see what's left of our social safety nets done away with.

The problem with Romney's comment is that 3/4 of that 47% are senior citizens on social security who have paid in all their lives and are now receiving the benefits, or if you must call them "entitlements." I believe they are entitled to the money they were promised when they were paying in all those years.

The other problem with Romney's comment is that it smacks of "dog whistle" racism. Insinuating that the same people who are on government assistance are the same people who will vote for Obama no matter what insinuates that they're the black moochers on welfare and hints at Romney's total lack of support among black voters in this country. I'm sure many people will disagree that it's racist, but it certainly sounds like that "wink wink" racism which is so common these days.

Mitt Romney gave an almost exact duplicate of "You didn't build that" Speech that Obama gave some time ago. Daily Show had them play side by side. Despite the fact that the speeches are essentially true. You didn't build that road, you didn't build the police and fire station, you usually didn't build that building. Life... is not an independent endeavor you can take without support of anyone.

Ah, the old 'My words were taken out of context' excuse, so beloved of politicians; and those of the right-wing, nine times out of ten, I always find...!

Certainly in places/situations where they know they're 'preaching to the converted', where they think they're in safe territory, and what they come out with - without the neural filter of Political Correctness switched on - they won't be called out on (because they know everyone present is 'singing from the same hymn sheet'). Somehow forgetting that devices called digital audio recorders exist (I have one, made by Olympus. Superb little gadget it is, with built-in USB connection to any computer for file transfers & thus conversion to MP3s, and linked via input/output cables to any audio system, it makes tape obsolete; very sensitive microphones it has, too).

Dunno about those in the US, but politicians here in the UK learned - even before the invention of digital audio recorders, smaller than the microcassette tape recorders (dictaphones) that existed then - 'There is no such thing as "This is strictly off the record...!"'.

No, both of those comments are pretty straightforward. You can see the whole video where they said it, in context. There is no way to spin or distort the 47% comment in a way that's in any worse, or better. Just watch the video, it speaks for itself.
As for the "you didn't build that" thing, the only distortion of that I saw was courtesy of Fox News. I think that comment was simply correct.

It's amazing how they'll deny an entire paragraph of their canidate as "not what he meant" but pick one segment out of context from the other side and insist it overrides the full statement.

Romney said this to a room of wealthy patrons but he's been against social programs for years. His big bomb here isn't that he says welfare recipiants are a drain on society or the social programs will bankrupt America, he's constantly speaking shit like that. The bomb was putting a number on it, 47%. That includes your retired family member who's been paying into the fund since the 60s, thats your soldier currently serving in Afganistan and his brother back home with one bad leg and the other one gone.

When you hear a straight out condemnation of people who have earned their pittance spoken to a room of mostly inheritors of wealth (most rich people are) it should give you pause at least. If it's anyone claiming special entitlements it's these children of privilage, Romney and Ryan included.
