Quote# 90293

A new iniative by the liberal governments propaganda arm, CNN, is focusing on food insecurity. Intent on further expanding Federal tryanny this effort is designed to create in the public eye a new danger. Seniors, we are told, are fearful of hunger and the government must expand its efforts to meet this psychologial need.

Featuring spots where well dressed elderly women in very nice homes, with those $1,500 refrigerators in the background (oops), tell how important it is that minions deliver hot meals paid for with borrowed Chinese money so that they can feel a warm glowing feeling that they are being well cared for. After all, they have old legs and might fall down if they have to trudge into their kitchen and prepare their own meal.

With elderly parents facing this threat of instant death by starvation, their neighbors and kids are nowhere to be found.

It falls to government to save them.

And thus the power of the Federal beast is and must be increased. To ensure that our obese and lazy society is taught to sit and beg for food. Like domesticated dogs.

Thus the evolution of mankind unto perfection. Under government supervison.

Incidentally, the US government does not borrow money from the Chinese in any meaningful way.
China manipulates the currency by buying dollars, not government bonds. US companies sell dollars to get yuan, used to buy cheap chinese goods. Normally, this would cause the yuan to appreciate, but ever-new yuans get printed and used to buy dollars, keeping the yuan low. It's like selling things on credit, except they're selling things to YOU, not to the government.
US government bonds are overwhelmingly bought by americans.

But I understand your worry about the deficit, which is an excellent reason to raise taxes. In real world maths, that is, not Laffer-land.

Yeah, let's leave everyone to fend for themselves 100%. It's the Republican way. Screw what that liberal hippie Jesus said about feeding the poor.

Are we really that selfish that we bitch & moan about helping someone who needs it even if it means we have to wait until the next paycheck to buy the latest Xbox game?

And yet, they insist that "studies show" that conservatives give far more money to charity than liberal do, which proves that conservatives are more compassionate than liberals.

Guess you can tell I am getting to be a bit suspicious of that line

"obese" Yeah, based on that out-dated BMI system! The BMI does not take age, gender, muscle mass, water weight, actual body fat or bone density into question...just height and weight! This is problematic because it labels athletes and other people who are NOT fat as "obese" or "overweight". Do you really expect a 30 year old man to weigh the same as a 16 year old girl, even if they are the same height? I didn't think so! Oh, and I hate that "screw the poor" attitude! Jesus is probably throwing up as He reads this, but not for the reason that the OP thinks! Not everyone who is poor is lazy! There are people who work two or three jobs and still have a tough time making ends meet! Not all obese people are lazy! There are plenty of fat people who work two or three jobs to make ends meet or exercise a lot or both! (I'm skinny though, don't think that I'm just saying it because I feel threatened)
How much do you want to want to bet that this uncharitable bastard is rich, well-fed and living off of inherited money, thus never having to work a day in his life?

@Violet there are also plenty of overweight people who have disabilties, case in point my brother, he has autism and the mind of a toddler in a grown man's body. So therefore he has no idea of what he's eating and there are only certain foods he'll eat.

Mistercooper,

Meals on Wheels is a charity, often associated in some areas with churches and literally ran out of them. Private by the way. I'm not sure if the government does anything with it. I know I've run a few runs with my Christian aunt because it's a good cause. This guy doesn't really address Christian or anything else, and considering he's attacking a charity ran out of Christian churches often times... well? I dunno. Either he's self depreciating or he hates Christians too.

Eldery face poorer lives due to malnutrition and got those nice refrigerators when they had jobs and didn't have the constant fear of having these 'old legs' fall out and leave them helpless.

More Info: http://www.mowaa.org/page.aspx?pid=480

Also, most Republicans expect private charities to provide things that the government tries to provide with healthcare and other programs like food stamps. Which doesn't really work, Charities don't have the reach or ability of government. It's like saying the police should be a volunteer force of dedicated citizens.

@Dr.Shrinker- actually, the study is probably true. Wealthier people tend to be more conservative and because they are wealthy they are able to give more money to charity. Of course, then you get other conservatives who ride on their coattails and try to claim that by being conservatives they should get some of the credit for it. Then you get conservatives like MisterCooper who don't want to help anyone and yet still get lumped together in that category.

Better to just let the infirm and elderly die in the streets instead, right?

"With elderly parents facing this threat of instant death by starvation, their neighbors and kids are nowhere to be found."

Maybe all of their neighbors and kids are conservative fucktards who think old people should get off their lazy asses and do something for themselves instead of waiting on someone else to help them. After all, what do these old people think, that they're entitled to something like basic nutrition when most of them are retired and aren't even working? They're just sucking their poor former employers dry by collecting a retirement check every month, not to mention living off the government teat of Social Security, right?

"It falls to government to save them."

And who else has the breadth of power to actually regulate such things and ensure that the elderly are getting adequate nutrition and so forth?

"And thus the power of the Federal beast is and must be increased. To ensure that our obese and lazy society is taught to sit and beg for food. Like domesticated dogs."

I was being sarcastic a few paragraphs up about the elderly being lazy and not working and expecting handouts because they're entitled to it. You, on the other hand, are just a fucking moron and I hope when you get old you don't have jack shit and suffer long for it so that maybe you'll learn some empathy, even if only at the end of your life.

I know my grandmother, living alone with bone cancer and worrying about paying my grandfather's monthly nursing home bill, accepted Meals on Wheels. It was the only way she could get nutritious daily meals because she was totally housebound in a Minneapolis winter.

She died in the spring, so she didn't leach off the government for long, MisterCooper, you spiteful, selfish monster.

I certainly hope that when you reach your "golden years" that you end up scraping dog food out of the garbage cans you find in the back alleys where you sleep on discarded newspapers and banana peels. That'll teach the government not to mess with you.

I've delievered meal for Meal-on-Wheels before. I know our local service gets funds from United Way and other sources and possibly some government grants, but not likely. I can say this much. Not a single person I delivered a meal to was completely able bodied or overwieght. In other wordds, STFU.

Wait, wait, wait... weren't you the ones who were oh so concerned about the elderly when Obama's so-called "death panels" were at the top of the Faux News talking points list? Now you don't even care if they starve to death? Why, it's almost as if you just want to blast Obama no matter what he does.

@Dr Shrinker
I'm guessing that the studies show the actual amount of money donated, rather than the proportion of income donated. Wealthy people are more likely to be conservative, because the Republicans are more interested in big business and the rich, than the Democrats. And wealthy people are able to donate more money without feeling it. Maybe.

10/24/2012 9:27:29 AM

Hunger, a "psychologial need"? Don't you mean a physiological need?
"Instant death by starvation"? Don't you mean gradual death?
You've highlighted the problem here, which is that kids and neighbours don't necessarily care about old folk. Poor old people are often isolated. That's because we live in an individualist society where people aren't necessarily encouraged to care about each other, or think in a communitarian way. What if you were an old person, with no-one to help you, very little money, and mobility issues, sitting in a freezing cold flat? Of course you'd be more vulnerable to illness and death. The logical conclusion of radical economic individualism and social darwinism (not expressed by this guy, who isn't quite brave enough to say it) is that the old and weak will perish, and that this is a good thing.
The only other alternative is the kind of communitarian, collectivist thinking and compassion which is always condemned by the right. Why does it suit big business for individuals to be lonely and atomised? Because they're easier to make money off that way. Mutual aid isn't profitable, therefore it's not encouraged. So yet again, we see the big contradiction in the American right: Do you want community, or individualism? Do you want authoritarianism, or libertarianism?

Papabear

Damn right! We should downsize that old hag's housing by getting her into a refrigerator box in the park. And cut off any food aid. Hell, if she dies she dies, that's what old people are for.

As someone who has experience with that disorder, though on the much ligher spectrum, Autistics tend to have little ability to read what's going on their own body. Why I tend to do very inappropriate thing in public because I have no idea I'm doing them. It took me a while to figure out I was eating way past what my body wants or needs a,d even then, it was a concerted effort. Even if he did know and was far milder, he'd still probably be overweight and malnourished unless he was well educated on the facts.
