Quote# 90399

Our school systems have spent the last few decades teaching us that we're nothing more than animals. So why should people and the press get upset when people act like animals? People are behaving in the manner that we've permitted the culture to tout--that we're just animals anyway. They should rejoice their classroom lectures have stuck!

You see-it's much, much better taking out the moral standards outlined and dictated by a Holy God from schools. Having kids shoot at each other or even massacre kids at school--or promoting perverted sexual behavior is much better and much more contributing to a solid society. That's why there's no decay in our cities, countries and why we have full jail cells--it's what the animals do.

And since Darwin was "right"...so why would I get in trouble for whacking my neighbors--since they compete for the same resources as I? Isn't that part of their social Darwinism mantra? Survival of the fittest? Funny--they want you to believe you're animals but get twisted out of shape when people act like animals. How inconsistent and shallow.

Biology and ethics are two separate domains.
Human cultures have nothing to do with biology and infinitely more to do with, what brings the optimal welfare to all.
So, acting like an arsehole has jack to do with biology, but it is 1) unethical, 2) harmful to society.

Doubting Thomas

First of all, I'm guessing this person hasn't even stepped foot inside a public school for many years.

Secondly, Darwinism =/= social Darwinism. Evolution =/= getting to kill other people in competition for resources. We've evolved since caveman days.

So if teaching people that they're animals causes them to act like animals, what does teaching them that they're filthy, depraved sinners cause them to act like?

11/28/2012 8:47:52 AM

The total lack of understanding of animal behaviour being just the tip of the dumberg.

11/28/2012 8:52:08 AM

The word "animal" has two different meanings depending on context: in casual speech, it means non-human members of the animal kingdom. In biology, it means any member of the animal kingdom, including humans. "Acting like an animal" is just a slang expression for ignoring human conventions and standards of behavior and acting like non-humans. Just because a human is an animal in the biological sense doesn't mean we're not expected to act like humans. That's ridiculous.

I'm getting sick and tired of these sorts of arguments. That human genetics and evoltuion follows the same fundamental laws as lion genetics and evolution does not mean that when the new stepdad comes in he should kill the children of the previous father. In fact it's just evolution that gave us brains to feel empathy because we are social animals. Just like apes and ants don't massacre within their pack/nests because they too are social animals, it doesn't mean that humans do to. Why? Because we're different animals than lions.

The irony on the other hand is beautiful, that somebody who's entire worldview evolved evolutionary - the we/they dichotomy, the need to exclude harmful members of society from society (and therefor from spreading their genes), the need for order and rules. It all comes from evolution and that we came from social animals in the first place. The difference between fundemantalists in history and liberals and left-wingers is that while they find out by random trial and random error what what works, we actually think about what is beneficiary to society; does it make sense to exclude 10% of society because they are attracted to the same gender they are? Does it make sense to deny half of it participation because they have different genitals from the other half? Does it make sense to swim upwards a stream every year to lay your eggs just were you were laid to? Does it make sense to put away members of society that have previously harmed others? Does it make sense for somebody to have to believe certain things to be considered a member of society? Does it make sense to fight for leadership instead of making a non-violent decision? Does it make sense to kill your stepchildren?
We use social constructs too, and some of them have been benificiary and some of them have not, be a business(wo)man and think about our investments in rules.

Misunderstanding Darwin 101...

Mister Spak

"And since Darwin was "right"...so why would I get in trouble for whacking my neighbors--since they compete for the same resources as I?"

Homo Sapiens survived by being co-operative with their neighbors - you christians have obviously not evolved enough yet to understand this. You can only refrain from whacking your neighbors if you are thretened by a giant man with a long white beard who lives on clouds and will whack you if you don't do what he says.

11/28/2012 9:42:33 AM

There are far more complex issues behind our current cultural woes than you will ever understand. Being taught the truth of our biology is not one of them.

11/28/2012 9:42:38 AM

1. You mean prehistoric tribes, Romans, Attila the Hun and his horde, the Crusaders, etc., etc. never acted like animals because Darwin wasn't around to tell them they were?

2. If you attempt to whack your neighbors, what does that make you fit for?

3. If you aren't an animal, how come there are so many fleas in your mother's kennel?

11/28/2012 10:05:10 AM

Wtf kind of animal documentary have you been watching?

11/28/2012 10:24:30 AM

evolution is descriptive, not prescriptive.

Also, humans evolved to live co-operatively in groups. Our ability to co-operate is the reason we have accomplished so much.

"fittest" does not mean strongest, or most violent. In social animals like humans, the fittest are those that get along well in groups, and you know, don't go around killing group members.

11/28/2012 10:25:50 AM

At least animals in the wild kill each other purely for food. When was the last time you saw animals killing each other over religious/political differences?

I wouldn't like to be killed/raped/harmed, nor would I want my property stolen/damaged, so why should I want to do the same to others?

And that's the difference. Certainly between we Atheists and you fundies.

Your 'Holy God' murdered the entire planet's population (save eight). I've yet to kill just one person, nor do I want to, ever. Seems I'm one up over your 'Holy God' in the [i]moral standards' stakes then, WTFPillpopper.

11/28/2012 10:32:20 AM

Well, that's exactly what fundies believe in doing, besides ripping up wombs and dashing babies' brains out, and not for food, shelter, or resources, but because the Lard said the victims were believing wrong.

Your confusing a wildly held scientific theory of Evolution with very conservative now wildly debunked
Social Darwinism
Witch is an ideology of society that seeks to apply biological concepts of Darwinism or of evolutionary theory to sociology and politics,
It was way to blame the poor for being born poor and reward the rich for being born rich .
This ideology was adopted by many rich American industrialist It allowed to do many despicable thing and to do it guilt free
But not to worry Social Darwinism is alive and well the Conservatives never give up on a ideology like this one they just simply re-brand it and now call it American imperialism or The "Bush Doctrine,"
The funny thing here is this fundie probably believes-in the ideology of Laissez-faire or Social Darwinism and doesn’t even realize it .She/he just assumes anything with the word Darwin in it must be un-fundie like and therefore evil very evil .

11/28/2012 10:41:04 AM

Humans are thinking animals. When you stop thinking, you're no longer human.

Holy crap, I gotta put that on a business card!

11/28/2012 10:46:14 AM

Bush doctrine? Ithought the rebranding occured with trickledown economics.

11/28/2012 10:48:21 AM

From what I've read of your ability to reason, I would have to agree that you are not an animal and you should be reclassified as a vegetable.

Schools dictate a Holy God's moral standards throughout the Middle East. See how peaceful and loving they are?

11/28/2012 10:56:56 AM

"And since Darwin was "right"...so why would I get in trouble for whacking my neighbors--since they compete for the same resources as I?"

I don't base my morals on evolution, because that would be as stupid as basing them on gravity, or electromagnetism.

Even if I did, killing my neighbours would go go against "survival of the fittest", which actually means fit for purpose, rather than being the physically fittest.

I would either be executed or sent to prison, either of which would prevent me from passing on my genes. Life would be harder for any existing children I had, as they would lose a parent to provide for them and have the stigma of being a murderers child. This could limit their oppurtunities to reproduce.

Also, if we all went around thieving, raping and murdering, we wouldn't be able to work together to build houses, schools, hospitals etc. These things allow us to live longer and in much better conditions, giving us more time to pass on our genes.

So, even if you base your morals on evolution, it makes sense not to kill people.

11/28/2012 11:24:02 AM

You really should try reading a book on evolution.

I love how these morons can mistake what "is" for what "should be". Evolution makes it pretty clear, if you want to live in a just society you should not expect a lot of help from our biological nature.

Arctic Knight

"Having kids shoot at each other or even massacre kids at school"

The decade of the 1950s, the last decade prior to mandatory school lead prayer being abolished, saw 19 school shootings. Comparing that to our previous decade, the 2000s which only say 10 school shootings, it would appear as if those innocent, praying children were much more deadly than today's youth.

The facts don't back up your false assertions.

(No, I am not drawing a correlation between lack of prayer in public schools and and decrease in school shootings, I am only using facts to show the absurdity of those who make a false correlation between the removal of prayer and an increase in school shootings.)
