Maybe it's due to the fact I've been up for like 16 hours, but did he really say gravity doesn't exist? Wait, he means it. HA! *crashes on keyboard*

Until you have actual evidence that the world you live in is a single giant illusion--or a simulation--there is no particular reason to go about assuming that it is.
It accomplishes nothing.
11/2/2012 2:32:44 AM
@TheReasonator: Really? You don't think that people can work together to fix our problems? That each of us has the power to make some positive difference even if it is only felt locally? Just because they aren't all solved in our lifetime doesn't mean we aren't advancing towards solutions.
11/2/2012 3:40:15 AM
CysticKnut, so gravity is but a theory, huh? Well, why don't you test this theory, right now? Go to Toronto & visit the CN Tower, ride the elevator to the top then JUMP OFF!
If you float, your hypothesis is correct, if you go splat, you a wrong...dead wrong...LITERALLY.
...Waddaya waitin' for, man?!
11/2/2012 10:45:09 AM
Nothing makes morons like fundamentalist religions.
11/2/2012 6:39:29 PM
Ok, try jumping from the ESB and you'll tell me if gravity is "just a theory"

Fundies Make Me Sick
Another fundie with no brain.
11/5/2012 2:59:21 PM
This does not belong on this site. I'm sorry, but nothing this guy said is stupid or invalid, even though you're all acting as if it was, and it's CERTAINLY not 'Fundie'. As an existentialist myself, and as a non-religious person who nonetheless believes the existence of a god is a distinct possibility, I actually agree with everything this guy actually said. Please note that he wasn't espousing these thoughts as facts...just observing that they're completely possible, since we can't ever really be sure of the evidence provided by our senses.
I was under the impression that people who weren't atheists but still found fundamentalism reprehensible were welcome on this site.
Help me out here. When did we change the site name to "Non-Atheists Say the Darndest Things"?
Oh, and to the guy who argued that speculating on this kind of thing was 'useless'...you really don't get this whole concept of 'philosophy', do you?
11/6/2012 12:27:56 AM
As is pointed out frequently, there are various forms of fundamentalism, of which religious is only one. A common thread in them is that they have a strong dogma that often rejects a 'reasonable' morality ("in a truly free market you can sell yourself into slavery!") or common sense, ignores science and/or rewrites history, and will not admit to the possibility of being wrong. So you can be a fundamentalist misogynist, a fundamentalist flat-earther, or a fundamentalist libertarian. Just as easily, you could be a fundamentalist feminist (all men are evil and should be hanged, drawn [castrated & disembowled] & quartered), or a fundamentalist Stalinist (genetics? that goes against our Marxist principles!). Probably some sports fans could wander into this territory ("The Only True Sport is Baseball").
11/10/2012 12:54:15 PM
(*wipes tears from eyes
Oh, that's just made my day, that has! (that, and downloading the first episode of the new series of "MLP:FiM". Ponieeez!). Are you channelling our old resident punmeister Carbonated Margarine?!
"This does not belong on this site. I'm sorry, but nothing this guy said is stupid or invalid, even though you're all acting as if it was, and it's CERTAINLY not 'Fundie'"
Ahem. I refer you to the one quoted in this thread:
"Gravity is a theory"
With me, so far? And now the kicker (emph-ass-is added):
"It's all enforced by a Creator
"They simply are being imposed by a higher power
Yes. That DOES make Mystic Shite a Fundie. Ergo, it DOES belong here in FSTDT. QED. Next question. Oh, and this is a doozy:
"If gravity was a fact, I would suspect the philosophical argument of whether we know a physical world exists would be debunked
(*Switches to Doug Piranha mode
So 'Gravity is a myth: the Earth sucks
' is more than just toilet graffiti scribbled n the wall of a karzi by a crappy 'philosopher', who's contemplating his anus
, amirite?! [/hyper-sarcasm]. And on the subject of 'Philosophy', you must excuse me...
(*Makes sound of one hand clapping by striking the fingers of that hand on the palm, whilst watching a cat in a locked box with a flask of poison & a radioacive source - through the box's transparent Perspex sides; about to return to a forest, having previously placed a digital audio recorder - with auto-record & a lithium battery - near a rotting tree that was creaking as the wind blew; to retrieve such, press 'Play' and replay the sound of said tree falling over when there was nobody around to hear it doing so
'Philosophical Questions'? I piss on 'em!
[/hyper-sarcasm II] >:D
11/10/2012 1:49:36 PM
So 'Gravity is a theory
' eh? As I mentioned previously, so are Germs. If you cuntbrains are going that way, then reproduction is a theory
And margarine is made from freshly squeezed babies too. Hey, the 'facts' can't lie!
"the philosophical argument of whether we know a physical world exists"
Someone's been watching the "Matrix" films too many times, and having ideas above their station; certainly spending too much time 'thinking' about things that are completely irrelevant to them. Next stop, CTSTDT!
PROTIP: There are those twats - the 'Flat Earthers' - who claim that this world being spherical
is a mere 'theory'. The US Army/Marines/DoD would like a word with them about their claim that the world being 'flat' is fact
And the likes of Valentina Tereshkova, Alexey Leonov, John Glenn, Dr. Buzz Aldrin et al would have to get in the queue, too.
Moral: Get a life!
Otherwise, prove me wrong
re the so-called 'physical world': go to the highest building in your locale, and jump off the top. After all, even if you don't become two-dimensional and survive, pain is a mere 'illusion', is it not?!
Every second you're not doing so, means that you admit that I'm right, and your so-called 'philosophy' bullshit is wrong.
Never mind Gravity (the artificial generation of such via rotating sections in spaceships; the 'Discovery' in "2001: A Space Odyssey"; also the 'Leonov' in it's sequel, "2010". The Omega-class cruisers in "Babylon 5"), Evolution (too much evidence to suggest otherwise), and recently the Big Bang (the finding of the Higgs-Boson via the Large Hadron Collider), these examples just go to prove that 'theories' have a rather nasty habit of becoming Facts.
11/11/2012 10:40:36 AM
"Gravity is a theory." Throw yourself off a high building and prove it.
"For all I know, there is no force between objects." It sure does look exactly like if there was.
"For all I know, material objects don't exist, and only souls exists, and there is a designer giving rise to our experience of the material world. "
There is no spoon.
11/14/2012 1:44:48 PM
"...material objects don't exist, only souls exists..."
So inanimate objects have souls? You're an animist now?
And I liked the "gravity is a myth" thing better when it was the Flying Spaghetti Monster holding us down with His noodly appendage.
