Obama is right-wing, seen from a global point of view at least.
What was not pretty was Dubbya's eight years in office; when the world economy went into free-fall. Obama is trying to rectify some of the wrongs that were done during those years. It will take the Democrats quite a few periods in office to repair Dubbya's mess.
Homosexual abortion? Yeah, those horrible homosexuals, with their constant abortions...
High prices - yeah, maybe you have to pay full price for your petrol, like we in Europe have been doing for years. You pay per gallon what we pay per litre.

So... how would a hypothetical gov'ment, which we all know will never exist like that, dedicated to caring for EVERYBODY lead to mass unemployment and a total mess?
Sure, socialism would probably lead to less availablility of goods, rationing of certain stuff and an overall drop of prosperity to a more uniform mediocrity until some sort of grand plan eventually comes to fruition... but we all know none of this will ever happen. No one, at least in America, really wants it to. Everyone likes the marketplace, to some degree, just like most people like a certain amount of gov'ment intervention. It will settle there, in a state of unexitement, with time.
