[Free Republic actually pens an open letter to the Queen of England following Obama's victory.]

Your Majesty,

We, the people of the former American colonies, would like to offer our most sincere apology over that little misunderstanding we had 236 years ago. Had we known that we were going to be subjects anyway, we could have saved a lot of trouble and hard feelings.

We were under the mistaken belief that we would be free, sovereign citizens; we believed that our hard work would yield its own rewards without someone coming along and taking what we built in the name of “Fairness”. We thought our laws and Constitution would protect us from a foreign born dictator, and our freedom to worship would prevent us from becoming a corrupt, morally bankrupt society (silly us).

Little did we know that our own free press would intentionally sabotage, deceive and withhold the truth from us in order to reelect a Socialist that still holds distain for our nation and contempt for its founding principles. Nor did we believe that there would be so many citizens dependent on government handouts that they would blindly elect an unqualified charlatan, let alone reelect him.

Anyway, Your Grace, we are truly sorry and humbly sincerely beg your forgiveness. If you can find it in your heart to forgive us and take us back, we promise never to trade British oppression for Socialist tyranny again.

Your most humble servants,

The American People

When do you think would be the right time to tell this bunch of idiots that the United Kingdom is substantially more socialist than the USA has ever been, even with Obama?

Tl;dr: We didn't know all of these freedom would allow other people to disagree with us!

I'll just say about this and all the other post-election related submissions:

What a bunch of fucking drama queens.

@ SpukiKitty
"Britain is simply an Island with three little countries making one big country who don't rule any other lands (though Canada is a commonwealth)"

The Dominion of Canada is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, along with the rest of the former British Empire, plus Mozambique and Rwanda. In Canada, the Queen is the official head of state, and holds about the same level of power as she does in Britain, which is exercised on her behalf by the Governor General of Canada. Several other members of the Commonwealth have similar arrangements. However I think your point was that the Queen's position in these governments does not entail any practical control over them, which is certainly the truth.

@UHM and Felix Wilde: It's much simpler than that. Socialism has state or worker ownership and control of means of production, capitalism has private ownership and control of means of production.
That's the essential difference.

it has been commented here (and elsewhere) how the right wing, the GOPers, Tea-tards, and esp Freepers sail under false colours.

They wrap themselves in the flag at every opertunity, especially to disparage anyome vaguely leftish (i..e. commie!), yet when the democratic process turns up what they don't want they suddenly talk of violence, revolt, seccession, and high treason

How does that work?

Canada is a commonwealth in the sense that it consists of ten provincial governments under a national federal government, in the same manner as the Commonwealth of Australia. In the same sense, the U.S. is also a commonwealth. And Cromwell's Commonwealth was a republic.

@farpadokly:

I think that statements like "Europe is socialist" should be read as "by you freepers' twisted understanding of socialism, Europe is socialist." Admittedly most of Europe is capitalistic of a sort that is simply more left-wing than the US, but to freepers, everything to the left of Reagan is a vast commie plot, an idea which we mock. I think we should make some exceptions for the Scandinavian nations, however, as they have long been dominated by explicitly social-democratic parties and can reasonably be considered moderately socialist.

Edit:

According to Wikipedia, only about 5% of Sweden's economy is government-owned, and they're working on further privatization now. So I guess you're right, even the Swedes are capitalists.

@Mihangel apYrs:

As far as I can tell, it is impossible to understand how a freeper's mind works without first surviving a severe cranial injury. I do not recommend this.

Everything about this is bizarre. The treason isn't surprising but are there really still Republicans who don't know England is more "socialist" than Obama? Didn't they have a fit when Romney got his ass ridiculed by the entire country and several Tories and Tory newspapers during the Olympics? Wasn't there a poll saying like only 3% of Britons had a favorable opinion of Romney? Weren't they all steaming mad at England a few weeks ago??

Just how many of your principles are you willing to betray to get away from the nasty widdle black man?

By press censorship I was referring to the "Official Secrets Act" in the U.K. the government can and does censor the press when they feel it is needed. Not that it happens very often or for petty reasons but they do have an ability to do so that the 1st Amendment denies the U.S. government.

Anyone to the left of Ayn Rand is considered a socialist by you people. You don't have the first clue what socialism means. You say it as if it's an insult but make a fool of yourself every time you do.

If America is too liberal for you than you literally have nowhere else to go. Just about every other industrialized nation is far more liberal than the U.S.

"Little did we know that our own free press would intentionally sabotage, deceive and withhold the truth"

Yes it's called Fox News, the wing of the republican party that appeals to the ignorant and the ideological who could care less about the truth and what is good for this country but only care about finding ways to make their beliefs look justified.

Please, please, please go to Texas and secede. We will keep the good people of Austin though.

1) The monarch is never referred to as "your grace".
2) The monarch has only ceremonial powers. You need to be addressing the Parliament or, possibly, the current PM.
3) By your standards, our government would be outright commies.

From the President's first state visit:

Press reports stated that the Obamas got on extremely well with Queen Elizabeth & Prince Philip, who found them very charming and erudite, none more so than First Lady Michelle.

So after the Gaffemeister's 'London Isn't ready' crack at our 2012 London Olympics, nobody would've blamed Phil the Greek for any resulting Torettes-esque outburst at Mitt the Tit, should he have been elected. Major embarrassment for Mr. "Foot In Mouth Disease" Mittens! Therefore, if anything, the Teabaggers should be glad Obama won, certainly for the sake of the 'Special Relationship'. (after all, you Religious Reich types, who was it your God Emperor Dumbya went crawling to for support for his invasion of Iraq? Our Prime Minister Tony Blair)

Fair point, but as SpukiKitty's topic was Britain's control (or lack thereof) over other nations, I suspect it was the international organisation that s/he was thinking of when s/he used the word. Of course I could be wrong in that.

As has already been touched upon, here in Britain we don't have unlimited freedom of speech or freedom of the press. As your lord and master Rupert Murdoch recently found out when News International got a thorough telling off for all the illegal activities it used to dredge up the drivel it pretends is news.

And that's just for the unregulated (well, 'self-regulated', but that's the same thing) print media- we have these silly laws that mean anything broadcast as factual on TV or Radio actually has to be true. As soon as The United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland And Those Bits Of America Terrified Of Black People In Positions Of Power takes effect, Fox News is royally ****ed.

I'm...pretty sure you don't refer to HM as Your Grace...that's what you use for a Duke or... a religious official. Not sure which. But I know it's what you say to address them...I don't think you can use it in a written correspondence.
