[Linda Harvey's letter to gay-friendly companies]

Dear [name of company]: I am writing to you as a [former or potential] customer, to tell you why I will not be doing business with you, purchasing your products or services, nor speaking well of you to my family and friends. You are highly-rated by the "Human Rights Campaign" as a company supportive of many aspects of the homosexual activist agenda.

I am hoping you have done this out of ignorance about the true nature of both homosexuality and the goals of aggressive homosexual advocacy, such as that promoted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC).

In businesses that welcome homosexual and transgender people, workers who don't agree with these lifestyles often feel unwelcome and increasingly, encounter a hostile work environment. Some of these workers have been sued on trumped -up charges of "discrimination," just for politely expressing these values, even in their own private lives and on their own time!

In short, these are not my values. I think homosexual activism is doing harm to America. My values are to be kind to everyone, but not to condone or encourage immoral and high-risk lifestyles. By your company's support of homosexual behavior, which is changeable and unnecessary, you have insulted my family and my principles.

I do hope your executive decision-makers will at some point, see the truth and reject this conduct, but in the meantime, I am afraid we cannot patronize your business in any way, and for the present, I am going to recommend to family and friends that they also take their business elsewhere.

Dear god... WHAT HAVE THEY DONE ?

Not only will gays and pro-gays now favor them over any other business (pro-gays generally including people like atheists, y'know)...

But they will no longer have all these fundies buying their stuff (estimating they even knew the business before it became pro-gay), and they will even... talk bad of them in public...

The horror... Let's immediatly trash gays and win back a customer base that will trash us again when we'll support abortion/muslims/jews/pagans/atheists/anti-christian stuff/any anti-christian content/science in general/democrats/women rights/anything in the democrat agenda pretty much (pick one)

A typical response to Linda Harvey:

Dear sir/madam,

We have no intention of alienating a majority of our customers, employees, and even our family members to take a unilateral stance towards a social non-issue simply to affirm your personal preferences. You have the right to take your business elsewhere but be forewarned that the rights of others are just as inaliable throughout this country and most of the developed world.

This is an automated reply, please do not respond.

A less typical, more honest response:

Stuff it, bitch. Like losing an ultra-conservative's pinched pennies is a huge loss. Our profit margin sexually arouses our CEO and your morals aren't woth a mouse's fart in comparison.

This is an automated reply. Please do not respond as we didn't give a fuck the first time either.

Dear Linda,

We won't miss your money as much as we would miss the money we would lose if the general public thought we discriminated against gays. Do you think we want to end up in a PR disaster like that Chick-Fil-A dude? Go be a homophobic bigot somewhere else.

Sincerely,

The Real World

Dear Linda Harvey,
We don't care. You just wasted your time sending us this letter.

Human Rights? Nah, we can't have those, can we? Linda, you are aware that freedom of/from religion is also a part of human rights, right? If you refuse to respect the rights of homosexuals, why should we respect your rights to the religion of your choice, which actually IS, in contrast to homosexuality, both changeable and unnecessary.

Humans are just as unnecessary as homosexuality, when you think about it. Probably even more, as homosexuality is present in many different species, it must serve an important purpose. The Earth would not care if every human disappeared tomorrow, on the contrary; it would probably benefit from it.

Too bad, Linda dear, but you are part of a shrinking minority and few businesses will cater only to you. Most people accept that others are different from them and that others have just as much right to be respected as they do.

"I think fundamentalist activism is doing harm to America. My values are to be kind to everyone, but not to condone or encourage bigoted and high-risk lifestyles. By your bigotry and disrespecting behavior, which are changeable and unnecessary, you have insulted my family and my principles."
There, that sounds much better!

Dear Linda Harvey,

We have recieved your letter. First of all we'd like to thank you for taking an interest in our company. We as a business greatly appreciate customer input, and we love suggestions as to how we can serve you better.

As for your suggestion, I'm afraid we can't oblige. You see, our firm has taken a strong moral stance against religious bigotry and zealotry. To do what you're suggesting, we would have to fire all our gay employees simply for being gay. Since we don't fire employees simply upon the basis of religion, this would be hypocritical of us, especially once you consider that sexual orientation, unlike religion, is not a choice.

If you feel unwelcome at our business, it's your fault not ours. We've done our best to ensure a welcoming environment for everyone, not just conservative, small-minded religionists. We didn't shun you anymore than we shun the Muslim by not forcing our female employees to wear burquas. In short, we cannot take up on your suggestion because our firm believes that the collective freedom of all is more important than your precious, deeply held beliefs. Much, much more important. Given the fact that gays in the workforce have it harder in terms of employment discrimination, we find ourselves less than sympathetic to your pleas.

In summary, we understand we'll be losing your business, but frankly we don't care. Trends are showing that the general populace is becoming more and more accepting of gays and lesbians. To do what your asking and shun gays might just equate to a catastrophic marketing disaster, and we're not prepared to take that risk.

Now please, if you could take your anti-gay "moral values" platform with you into the time machine back to the 1800's, we'd be much obliged.

Sincerely,

A fair, equality-promoting business owner.

Dear [name of bigot]: Thank you for your letter telling us why you will not be doing business with us. Our values are those of the free market in which people may choose to do business with us or not as they please and we are happy to do business with anyone who wishes. Those of our employees who disagree are free to decide whether they wish to remain with us or not. If you have any evidence about employees being sued on "trumped-up charges of 'discrimination'," I suggest you submit them; if not, I would be careful about making very serious allegations against organizations with better-funded lawyers than you.

Our stance may run against your "values" but it is hard to see how that insults your family, whose position you do not mention, nor even you.

As you will be taking your business elseswhere, I understand you will not be using any products by Apple, Cisco, Microsoft or Xerox, that you will not be needing financial services from American Express, Bank of America, Capital One, Citibank, Chase Bank or Wells Fargo, that you will not be needing energy supply from PG&E, entertainment or cable from Disney or TimeWarner, internet services from Google, Yahoo or EBay, drugs from Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson or Pfizer or telecoms services from AT&T. We have forwarded your name to these companies and the other companies on the list to ensure that you no longer have to deal with their services and will gladly inform your local food and drug stores so that you don't buy, say, a vital prescription drug from a company that is not a censorious about gay people as you'd like them to be.

Oh sweet Jesus would I love to receive a letter like this! No joke. I’d encase it in a sealed museum grade picture frame and hang it up on a wall, so I could have a good laugh and say, “Well, at least I'm doing *something* right,” on those ugly days when everything just seems to go wrong.

I'm not being the least bit facetious. Seriously, homophobic Bible-thumpers are an endless source of humor. The gay rights movement is at a major turning point, and it's clear that the haters are on the wrong side of history yet again. It’s terribly sad and incensing to hear things like the number of GLBT youth being kicked out of their homes has jumped 500%, but that just makes me all the more inclined to laugh at those bigots’ expense as they flail around, frothing at the mouth, like the rabid cretins they all are. The sheltered and repressed little world they held so dear is crumbling around them, and it’s funny. Their self-imposed anguish is even funnier still.
