So in other words, being a sociopath makes "us" better off. Got it.

Understanding and knowing your enemy is a fundamental of war. Thats not empathy.
11/30/2012 11:13:48 AM
Citation needed on Obama lacking empathy, and on his being famous for such. The former is almost certainly false. Consider his reaction to the Trayvon Martin case.
Empathy is necessary to understand and anticipate the behavior of others, and is essential to the functioning of human society. On the most basic level: if you don't understand that your children and friends are in pain, you will be a lousy parent and associate and your group will not survive.
Over-expressed empathy responses can be dangerous, but empathy itself is necessary for human society to function. _Not_ having empathy is diagnostic of psychological disorders: psychopathy, antisocial personality disorder, narcissism, schadenfreude, sadism, aggressive conduct disorder. Difficulties expressing empathy also shows up in autism spectrum disorders, without being malicious.
The quote is an impressive level of nonsense.
Is this Schlafly related to the infamous Andy and Phyllis?
11/30/2012 11:18:56 AM
idiocy runs in the schlafly family
@anon: yup, they're a big family, with maybe one not as bigoted as the others
11/30/2012 11:18:58 AM
You say "maybe one not as bigoted as the others". Who of the Schaflys isn't in the business of lying through her or his teeth? I have a great sympathy for that person - family reunions must not be fun.
11/30/2012 11:20:56 AM
Filin De Blanc
Well, considering this guy's family, he would know all about psychological problems.
11/30/2012 11:21:04 AM
What? Wow. So basically because rich people in our culture may become damaged by their social situation, and lack a core human trait, we think that's good? Seriously?
Of all the weirdness of this snippet, it's the idea the upper classes are what we want to be, this kind of royalism, that is pathetic and sad.
11/30/2012 11:28:25 AM
Though those who dislike Empathy would have loved Feudal Europe. Lack of empathy, even to family members, was very present in the leaders.
11/30/2012 11:30:34 AM
"I am wondering why everyone assumes that empathy is a good thing..." Uh, gee, um...I don't know, maybe because it IS a good thing!
11/30/2012 11:40:08 AM
The Crimson Ghost
You're a Schlafly. Nothing coming out of your pie-hole is worth listening to. Now go join your brother on Conservapedia.
11/30/2012 11:43:12 AM
"If it is good, then why is it that the upper classes don't want it? "
It interferes with conning you into voting for Romney so he can cut their taxes even more.
11/30/2012 11:47:39 AM
Don't worry buddy, I've got zero empathy for fuckwits like you who voluntarily put the yoke around your own necks and chastise the rest of us for running around free.
And I know others have said it, but as soon as I saw the name Schlafly, all I could think was damn, I feel sorry for the poor bastard with that last name who isn't a raging fascist dipshit.
11/30/2012 11:58:55 AM
"I am wondering why everyone assumes that empathy is a good thing."
- Because civilization depends on it.
11/30/2012 12:10:52 PM
Alright, look, this is obviously a poe. I mean, come on, really?
"I am wondering why everyone assumes that empathy is a good thing"?
"If [empathy] is good, then why is it that the upper classes don't want it?"?
Do those really not sound like a (rather unsubtle, in fact) Conservative straw-man?
I vote meh. While the opinion stated would be horrifying if it were genuine, I don't believe it is genuine.
11/30/2012 12:43:58 PM
actually, children don't get into the empathy jam before around nine years old. so a lack of empathy would be correlated with mental retardation.
11/30/2012 12:46:28 PM
Justifying scociopathy for Jesus!
11/30/2012 12:47:44 PM
So, it's NOT a good thing to see things from other people's point of view or think about how things might affect others instead of just yourself? I know the Republican party seems to have been pushing "every man for himself" for some time now, but damn.
11/30/2012 1:26:19 PM
If any of you scientists out there want to proof sociopathy to be a genetical thing, I'd send you to the Schlafly family for DNA samples.
11/30/2012 1:36:48 PM
This explains A LOT.
11/30/2012 1:38:28 PM
"If it is good, then why is it that the upper classes don't want it?"
Why not ask Bill Gates, George Soros, Warren Buffett, Ted Turner...
11/30/2012 1:50:01 PM
Calm down, Roger. Empathy is simply the possession and manifestation of emp.
11/30/2012 2:06:47 PM
That you wonder "why everyone assumes that empathy is a good thing" is very telling of you character. So telling, in fact, I suggest you leave the earth asap.
11/30/2012 2:28:42 PM
Oh look! It's from the Shitfly family! No wonder it was impossible to read without spitting coffee all over the room...
11/30/2012 2:29:04 PM
> I am wondering why everyone assumes that empathy is a good thing.
So, being unwilling to kill or harm others isn't a good thing? Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle.
> If it is good, then why is it that the upper classes don't want it?
As others have said here, there are quite a few rich folks with empathy, and they do not hesitate in exercising it. Not everybody is a greedball like Pat Robertson, you know.
11/30/2012 3:02:21 PM
@Anon: yeah, this is the "sane" one. Andy Schlafly's brother.
Basically, while Andy and Phyllis are screaming like banshees and angrily slinging their own shit at the walls, this guy is sitting quietly in the corner drawing on his own face in permanent marker. Compared to them, that makes him fucking Einstein. But as you can tell from the quote, he's still a fucking moron.
