Quote# 91024

Pres. Barack Obama is famous lacking empathy, but also for wanting to appoint judges with empathy, and for blaming 9/11 on an absence of empathy in the terrorists.

I am wondering why everyone assumes that empathy is a good thing. If psychologists can measure whether it is going up or down, then they ought to be able to measure whether it is making us better or worse off. Where's the evidence? If it is good, then why is it that the upper classes don't want it? I suspect that high empathy measurements are correlated with an assortment of psychological problems.

So in other words, being a sociopath makes "us" better off. Got it.

Understanding and knowing your enemy is a fundamental of war. Thats not empathy.

...

Citation needed on Obama lacking empathy, and on his being famous for such. The former is almost certainly false. Consider his reaction to the Trayvon Martin case.

Empathy is necessary to understand and anticipate the behavior of others, and is essential to the functioning of human society. On the most basic level: if you don't understand that your children and friends are in pain, you will be a lousy parent and associate and your group will not survive.

Over-expressed empathy responses can be dangerous, but empathy itself is necessary for human society to function. _Not_ having empathy is diagnostic of psychological disorders: psychopathy, antisocial personality disorder, narcissism, schadenfreude, sadism, aggressive conduct disorder. Difficulties expressing empathy also shows up in autism spectrum disorders, without being malicious.

The quote is an impressive level of nonsense.

Is this Schlafly related to the infamous Andy and Phyllis?

You say "maybe one not as bigoted as the others". Who of the Schaflys isn't in the business of lying through her or his teeth? I have a great sympathy for that person - family reunions must not be fun.

What? Wow. So basically because rich people in our culture may become damaged by their social situation, and lack a core human trait, we think that's good? Seriously?

Of all the weirdness of this snippet, it's the idea the upper classes are what we want to be, this kind of royalism, that is pathetic and sad.

Though those who dislike Empathy would have loved Feudal Europe. Lack of empathy, even to family members, was very present in the leaders.

It interferes with conning you into voting for Romney so he can cut their taxes even more.

Don't worry buddy, I've got zero empathy for fuckwits like you who voluntarily put the yoke around your own necks and chastise the rest of us for running around free.

And I know others have said it, but as soon as I saw the name Schlafly, all I could think was damn, I feel sorry for the poor bastard with that last name who isn't a raging fascist dipshit.

Alright, look, this is obviously a poe. I mean, come on, really?

"I am wondering why everyone assumes that empathy is a good thing"?

"If [empathy] is good, then why is it that the upper classes don't want it?"?

Do those really not sound like a (rather unsubtle, in fact) Conservative straw-man?

I vote meh. While the opinion stated would be horrifying if it were genuine, I don't believe it is genuine.

actually, children don't get into the empathy jam before around nine years old. so a lack of empathy would be correlated with mental retardation.

> I am wondering why everyone assumes that empathy is a good thing.
So, being unwilling to kill or harm others isn't a good thing? Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle.

> If it is good, then why is it that the upper classes don't want it?
As others have said here, there are quite a few rich folks with empathy, and they do not hesitate in exercising it. Not everybody is a greedball like Pat Robertson, you know.

@Anon: yeah, this is the "sane" one. Andy Schlafly's brother.

Basically, while Andy and Phyllis are screaming like banshees and angrily slinging their own shit at the walls, this guy is sitting quietly in the corner drawing on his own face in permanent marker. Compared to them, that makes him fucking Einstein. But as you can tell from the quote, he's still a fucking moron.
