Quote# 91954

I’ve often said that, ‘Thank God for slavery,’ because, you know, had not, then the blacks over here would have been stuck in Africa… Everybody and their Mama are trying to get out of Africa and come to America and so God has a way of looking out for folks and He made it possible by way of slavery to get black folks into this country.

…I thank God that He saw fit for me to get here. Never mind that, you know, (my ancestors) were sold… by Arabs and blacks to white folks… The ride over was pretty tough but you know, it’s like riding on a crowded airplane when you’re not in First Class. It’s a tough ride. But you’re happy when you get to your desitination… I thank God that he got me here and to show my appreciation to the blacks who suffered as the result of coming here, and Arabs and blacks who sold us to the white man, the white man for going there and getting us and bringing us here, I want to say, ‘Thanks.’

Is this part of the GOP's plan to reach out to African Americans? Dang, I'm afraid to see how they reach out to Hispanic Americans. A revival of the Frito Bandito perhaps?

What the fuck?
So slavery is like riding coach class?

Oh wait, its a preacher. No wonder.

@ Fifth Dentist and Kuno:

My point exactly, but I guess I didn't hammer it home hard enough.

PS: I wonder if the Reverend uses that analogy to justify a bump to First Class when he travels?

Right... Because being crammed into the belly of a slave ship and being forcefully relocated to serve as slave labor is just like flying coach...

By that rationale I should be grateful to the Potato famine for forcing my ancestors to leave their home behind to work for a pittance and be treated like shit by people who only had one generation on them.

Fuck you. No, seriously, fuck you.

I guess I should say the following here:

Martha, you're not seriously trying to compare white people running out of potatoes for a few weeks to what my ancestors went through, are you?

His, you're not seriously expecting a reply when you're a known and loathed troll, are you?
For the record, you should know the potato famine was devastating and horrific, and the Irish have been treated much like the Africans: enslaved, repressed, colonised, brutalised, treated as second class citizens for centuries.

"Would it be worth adding this to the High Octane Nightmare Fuel section of TV Tropes' article about FSTDT?"

This big Jessie has obviously never watched the early episodes of "Roots". Nor has he ever taken a tour of Wilberforce House, residence, now museum of local hero & abolitionist William Wilberforce. The sights/artworks/artifacts of/from the actual slave trade make anything in the "Saw"/"Hostel" films look like something out of Disney (at least said films are just visual effects).

Y'know, I've always thought that if a roofed stadium were ever built here (for football, rugby etc) it should be named the 'William Wilberforce Freedome'. And around the structure, a chain symbolising the slave trade, with - above the main doorway - the crest of Kingston-upon-Hull, a shield with three crowns, with it's point breaking said chain, representing freedom.

I've flown on airlines that treated passengers like chattel, but somehow I don't think it was nearly horrific as what the slaves endured sailing across the Atlantic.

The sad thing is that other teabaggers are going to pick up on this quote and say, "See? Slavery wasn't so bad. Here's a black man who even says so."

You're not seriously trying to say the potato famine lasted a few weeks are you?
And you're not seriously trying to say a famine is exactly like being kidnapped?

Wait, you're a fundie you really are that ignorant.

Also you spell potato like that conservative christian Einstein, Dan Quayle.

That means nothing. Martin Luther King Jr. was also a preacher.

That said, Rev. RUCKUS must have been dropped on his head one two many times as an infant. I have never heard anything so BATZOID INSANE in my LIFE!

I wouldn't be surprised if they did, along with Fu Manchu to reach out to the Asians.

@ Anon-e-moose
I'm a TV Troper. I'll add this one to the Nightmare Fuel page for FSTDTs.

I'm going to redub the not-so good reverend, "Reverend Ruckus".

EDIT: It's been done! Click this link and see my poppin' fresh, lovin' from the oven, new TV Tropes entry!

re: Irish potatoe famine/his4life’s comments:

I don’t know much about the famine, but according to Wikipedia it lasted 4 years and cost the lives of at least 1 million people, forcing another 2 million or so to emigrate to America, often on ships where the conditions were surely better than on slave ships, but not by much.

So I think it is only fair to criticize someone who calls it “white people running out of potatoes for a few week”. (Also, why is it important that it happened to white people?)

Either his4life is ignorant and shoots her mouth without checking the facts (and very insensitive, too) or she is just trolling, trying to start a flame war.

Either way, calling her out for it could IMO not seen as “picking on her”…
