I'd say it is unmitigated arrogance to think that the planet will take care of itself, and us, no matter what we do to it -- and believe me, we have long since reached the point at which our "efforts" can destroy this planet, at least in terms of its habitability where we are concerned. It is abject, arrant knavery to believe otherwise.
Yes, those atomic bombs are just a ruse and should be used constantly because surely Jesus would prevent the planet from, for example, breaking in half?
Should things progress as they have, some day the US could have a president who thinks along those lines.
Nuclear proliferation is there for a reason.
That assumes that:
a) God exists
All past human experience suggests that neither is true. We have overwhelming evidence that God has never intervened to stop huge numbers of people from dying, and many examples of people who locally destroyed their environment, and suffered horribly for it. Think Easter Island, the Norse in Greenland, or, in the 20th century, Nauru and Rwanda.

It is simply the truth. Do we have to save the world from a dinosaur-killer before you will accept this?
While in may be debatable whether mankind is yet powerful enough to destroy the entire planet, the ability on mankind to render the planet uninhabitable for himself is beyond debate, it's established fact.
So, just cause someone else is in charge, we should not do what we can to keep the Earth clean and healthy?
The sad thing is this comes over forty years after little things like Napalm, dead lakes and rivers from pollution and a little thing called the Nuclear Bomb.
