You've got to be joking. Catholics don't pray to Mary? I'm not sure what kind of Catholics you've met... but my Mother raised me a Catholic, both of her sisters are Catholic and my Grandmar was a Catholic and they all pray to Mary. Sometimes more than God.
What is the "Hail Mary" if not a prayer to Mary. Catholics can twist and writhe around the facts all they want, but they still pray to Mary.

There is no disagreement here between us and catholics that catholics do indeed pray to mary, they say that praying to the saints and mary are a way to ask for help to pray for the King. But the bible is clear on this issue :
1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
It's actually a prayer for Mary, and to ask her to pray for us. You must have been one fucked up catholic. I've heard christian preachers get up at funerals and say something along the lines of "George, we know that you are out of pain and in the hands of our lord jeebus". Is that praying to George?
What difference does it make to whom you pray? But, if you need to nail it down, Catholics "pray" (I'm not splitting hairs on what talking to dead people is called) to saints and their own deceased loved ones to talk to God on their behalf.
I was told that by a Catholic (i.e. the rest of my father's family), that they are asking Mary, as a godly woman, to help expedite they're prayers to the ears of god.

Yeah, well, I'd think it a safe bet that the vast majority of Catholics are somewhat oblivious to the difference between prayers for intercession from a saint vs. prayers directly to a saint. Most of the important prayers are learned by rote and I'd bet you there are an awful lot of people who would have a fair amount of trouble explaining exactly what they mean.
I mean, I was a CCD teacher and I still mumbled my way through the prayers just like everyone else.
No one's denying it.... We don't believe we're so important that God will drop everything to help us so we nudge Mary or (if in a hurry) one of the more obscure saints and ask them to have a little chat with God over beer and chips.
Also, we sacrifice babies, but that's a whole other story.
... no. That's not how it works.
And. You know. Even if they DO pray to Mary, so what? I'm much more down with worshiping her than the Skydaddy.
They pray to saints too. More of a "I don't want to bother God with this, maybe Saint George could give me advice, this is his area, my mother in law is a Dragon" sort of thing
Oh, I'm so sorry I take these beliefs lightly!
She is only the Holy Mother and rightfully entitled to that title. Now if you think Mary or Saint George are answering, then you can fuck off too.
Confused?
