Yes - I even tried it on myself when I was 6 and bored off my ass in church. (Didn't know what it was called back then).
Let's see - problems with Pascals Wager (apart from Pascal being a moron that got repeatedly owned by Sir Isaac Newton).
Case 1. Christian God exists.
According to Christian dogma you have to truly believe, not be hedging your bets - ergo. Try Pascals wager YOU GO TO HELL.
Case 2. Christian theistic God does not exist - nor does any other! (well you just wasted your entire life on a lie -OOOOPS!)
Case 3. (The one they neglect through arrogance) Another God exists. Well you're screwed even harder than you were in case 1.
So in summary. With Pascal's wager. You're screwed, you're an idiot, or you're really, really, really screwed!
(And given case 1 and 3 are impossible - we are left with YOU'RE AN IDIOT!!! by process of elimination)
Chad Aka (hereafter "ChAd") knows Pascal's Wager--good. But when I read his post it left me cold.
I first came across Pascal's Wager in a philosophy class in college and I recoiled from it. It was the most bloodless, heartless defense of God ever. There's no faith other than the faith in probability in Pascal's Wager. And it would be as equally valid for every religion that has a dichotomic afterlife (heaven vs hell) to use the same argument. I'm sure ChAd has had that point brought up to him before.
But I don't think that ChAd was focusing on the probability aspect as much as the pain and suffering angle should you choose incorrectly. His post was a threat, "do you REALLY want to burn forever?"
When I think of Christians, er, ChristiAns (sorry, ChAd) today I think of emotional bullies who are being dishonest to themselves for relying on an approach like Pascal's Wager that is based on logic. Where's the logic in the Bible?
Nittany, I think it's actually christiAns, seeing as except for the random A's, he had no clue about the shift key and capitalization.
ChAd, few atheists bash christians for their faith in the truth. We bash fundies for their belief that they have the right to tell us how to live our lives. And for their often deplorable spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills.
yep, the Fonz is back!
as for Pascal... in context of the man and his life, I can appreciate the desperation that caused him to make the wager. The man was a permanant invalid. I found the his "Pensees" heartbreaking. The man was a mathematical genius and, if he'd never got religion, I would have nothing but respect for him.
What happened to your A-key mid-sentence? Guess it comes and goes...
Pascal's Wager? Sure, I've heard of it. So, have you entered into each and every religion on the planet by now, or what? Just in case the Buddhists are right, or the Hindus, ya know.
you know i've noticed it to. people bAshing or hAting christiAns becAuse of our fAith in the truth.. i wonder if Any of them hAs ever heArd of blAise pAscAl And his wAger?
If you're going to randomly capitalize one letter every time it appears, make you sure get it EVERY time it appears.
Ooh, me, me, pick me!
Pascals Wager is: what if Allah is real and you haven't prayed towards Mecca five times every day? If Allah is not real, nothing will happen to you, but if he is real, then he'll punish you for eternity for not praying five times each day. Ergo, you have nothing to lose by praying, but everything to lose by not praying.
Something like that...
You know, I've noticed it too. People abusing the shift/caps lock key and/or apostrophe key, because of their 'hoemskuling'.
I wonder if any of them have ever heard of a decent education, never mind William of Ockham and his Razor ?
I wonder if anyone's heard of common sense in choosing their beliefs, the difference between "too" and "to", and how to capitalize properly. Or does this guy thing there's something about the letter "A" that it automatically deserves capitalization?

'Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just , then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust , then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones. '
-Marcus Aurelius
Seems this ancient Roman won the bet way before Pascal had even been born to make his 'Wager', eh Choad?
Your 'Truth' has as much 'sting' as a False Scorpion.
...and I'd see about having that keyboard of yours replaced, as there's something wrong with the 'a' & Caps Lock keys. It'll make you look less of a twat on the internet, Choad m'boy.
"people bashing or hAting christians becAuse of our fAith in the truth"
Belief in a story, myth, fairy tale. No evident truth.
Pascals Wager? Works for any God(s) or supernatural beliefs, therefor not an evidence or support for Christianity in any way.
He died in the 1600’s. Of course we've heard of it, you smug little child! You must be the last living creature on earth to have heard of Pascal's wager. It was garbage then, it's still garbage today.
Confused?
