(headshake smiley)My mom asked me this morning if I'm gonna turn my lights off at 8 sat night.uhhhh, yeah right!(eyeroll smiley) I think I might honor the occasion by running a load of wash, running the dish washer, every appliance I have A plug for and turning every single light I have in and outside my home(crazy eyes-crossed smiley)

What Grigadial and Papabear said. *sad sigh*
I don't recall there being any commandment--or even a suggestion--in the Bible to waste resources in God's name. In fact, taking good care of what you have here on Earth--taking good care of your God's creation, as it were--could be seen as a sign that you've been respectful toward God, thereby earning you a few brownie points when you meet Him.
Mehh, what'm I bothering with these people for? Even assuming there is a God who gives a shit about what we puny humans do, the RR-tards exist under the delusion that this mortal life we each live, far from being a grand, glorious experience to be treasured for the gift it is, is merely the equivalent of some cosmic office waiting-room.
ADDENDUM: SQUEEEeeeee! The Edit button is back! Thanks, Distind!
Hey look, one reasonable voice that will probaly go unheard in that thread.

No offense, but why would you cause your mother's electric bill to skyrocket?

I don't know. I go over there through here on occasion. But being a voice of reason wouldn't surprise me if it happened. Can't have any individuals over there.
Why.. why do Christians hate environmentalism so much? Didn't God order humans to watch over the Earth and protect it according to them?
Actually, according to the fundies (specifically), God gave man "dominion" over the earth and its creatures, which, according to them, means we can do whatever the fuck we want with it.
these twats will be the first quealing as the brownouts start.
Oh of course they're Americans, they'll buy things to waste while the poorest suffer!
I don't think that Ruth is a teenager. It's my impression that she is an adult living in her own home who had a conversation with her mother, who lives in HER own home. Most teenagers wouldn't talk about "running a load of wash". I realize, though, that the average RR poster DOES have the mentality of a 12 year old so I can understand the confusion.

Well, if you're doing a load of wash or dishes that you were going to do anyway it doesn't matter whether you do it at 8 p.m. or 3 a.m., you're going to use the same amount of engery anyway.
As for turning on all your lights, you're just a dickwad whose going to have a large utility bill.
Well, thanks for being a dick about it. I'm sure your children will thank you when they have no fuels left to run their own appliances.
I would have probably turned off my computer and read for an hour with a candle had I known it was on Saturday.
I think I was in bed by then, though, anyway (Friday was great day for me!) so at least I helped that way. :)
Why do you hate people so much? You do realise that your actions can have real and devastating effects on real, live people don't you? Christians among them. Did you learn nothing from Katrina? Are you so full of pride, arrogance and hubris that you can cheerfully condemn people to misery and in some cases death? Do you think that kind of behaviour is at all Christian? Why do you wallow in such appalling ignorance? You've been lied to, wake up before it's too late.
I'm on her side in this.
I feel as let down by the environmental movement as I do by the Church.
From genetic engineering through nuclear energy, from their erroneous economics to irrational spiritualism, they are as flexible and dishonest as young earth creationists.
Yes, I know there's some sane people in the environmental movement, just as there are in Churches. For years I tried to be one of those rational environmentalists. Can't be done. See the way they turned on Bjorn Lomborg, like Fundies turning on a free thinker. The evidence presented in The Skeptical Environmentalist stands unrefuted beyond quibbles, but that makes no difference to the rabid environmentalists.
I fact-checked 50 consecutive news reports about scientific articles related to Global Warming. There wasn't one of them that accurately reported the science. They always removed the 'on the other hand' data, and often made substantial scientific errors, like misreporting that data applying to the WAIS applied to the other 98 percent of Antarctica.
Earth Hour's effect on it's participating cities' CO2 emissions is, to the nearest whole number, 0% percent for the day.
It's a recruiting tool, not an effective solution. And it's recruiting people for inneffective, inappropriate solutions to address problems that in my informed opinion are overstated.
Earth hour CO2 reductions resemble the effect of Kyoto the way camping out for an hour resembles being homeless.
So turning the light on during Earth Hour is a valid political protest. The same way that the earth hour going dim for 60 minutes is a political gesture.
to be fair, earth hour is fucking retarded.
the power plants work just as hard, if all the sudden half the population turns their lights out, the same amount of fuel will still be used and the same amount of polution created.
I want to say two things on this;
First the general negativity towards "earth hour". It's not a solution or a attempt at one. It's a PR stunt, and did it's job by catching a lot of attention on a real issue. Admittedly a dumb pointless way.
Second someone claimed that doing the dishes would use the same energy at 8PM as it would any other time. Not quite true. While your appliance uses the same power, Energy is lost in the grid getting to your house. More energy in the system, the more stress on it, the more lost energy. So doing something during peak hours uses more energy than any other time (like sat at 8PM).
But then again our fundie friend was using the energy when an artificial drop in grid stress was present so genius might have actually done something environmentally friendly, assuming she actually didn't go turn all the lights on.
Considering that other than the board it's posted on, this thread has NOTHING to do with religion, I'm going to go ahead and say not fundie.
I'm an atheist, and I too protested against Earth Hour. It has nothing to do with a religion, and does not belong here.
The polarization of political beliefs with religious beliefs on this site bothers me sometimes. Just because someone is conservative doesn't mean they do it because of their religion. I am a conservative because it is the political morality dictated by logic, not because god told me to. Leave the guy alone and go after the real fundies. Your politics don't belong here.
@ Carl
It is only fundie in the stated reasoning behind R.R.'s anti-conservation mindset. Over and over, there have been threads there where people routinuely scoff at any effort to reduce consumption or waste.
They say it is pointless because the sky-daddy is coming to whoosh them off to heaven any day now. It isn't their political view, it is their belief that nothing on earth matters, they wont be here for much longer anyway.
Well, I suppose that's only fair, since I plan to spend Easter wiping my arse with copies of the KJV.
(What's most galling is that they then blame atheism for all the world's problems.)
((Yay! "Edit Comment" is back!))
LoL, wouldn't it be funny if he overloads his electrical system, then he would stop using electricity, possibly, forever, assuming someone with this level of intelligence would not be able to find the fuse box.
Hmm. I didn't do Earth Hour either. But I also didn't run everything I have a plug for and every light in my house. I ran my desk lamp, my computer, and my radio. I don't know what the rest of my house did, but I sure as hell wasn't running every damn light in my house.
It's fundie because these retards equate environmentalism with pagan earth worship, which to them, of course, is Satanism in disguise. Therefore they think they're laughing in the devil's face when they do things like this. It's stupid, but it's pretty fundie IMO.
The thread, while stuffed full of EPIC FAIL (nearly typed EPOCH FAIL there which, in a sense, would have been just as valid) isn't really that fundie (for RR, anyway), but this post is pretty much what you'd expect an RR-sehole to write on the subject:
Totally refuse to do so. My hubby and I watch our energy use all year 'round not for just one pathetic hour per year. Not for resuscitating the Earth(it's doomed) but it keeps our electricity bill down.
It's a just feel good exercise for the many hypocrites out there who otherwise would use electricity to the max without a second thought. Yes I know there are those who sincerely think they are doing good. Unfortunately many (including some Chrsitians) are not aware this whole Earth is doomed to destruction one day by our Lord.
Our lights are staying on.
Bet your mom loves it when you eat all her homemade cookies in one sitting or wash the sweater she gave you all wrong so it's doll-sized, right? No? You mean it pisses her off when you waste things she gave you for no good reason?
Then if your God is real, how do you think he feels?
Oh, and millionth-ing the "rebellion through high electric bill" comments.
#931463: "Actually, according to the fundies (specifically), God gave man "dominion" over the earth and its creatures, which, according to them, means we can do whatever the fuck we want with it."
Interestingly enough my parents are pretty fundie but they take the stewardship approach as part of that dominion so though they don't buy global warming (the evidence for it is akin to the evidence for evolution, in essence) they feel that doesn't mean we shouldn't be conserving and such anyway. I hang with non-religious "evolutionists" so I don't have a good idea how much of an exception my parents are.
Why did I read that post? God, I really can't stand these dip-shits.
Trying to interfere with the sane people who're working to educate others and protect the environment... GOOD JORB. When you're still here in 20 years you might thank them. Well, probably not. These idiots never seem to get a fucking clue.
Admittedly, Earth Hour is pretty stupid.
Somebody out there is spending millions of dollars advertising a national hour of not consuming natural resources -- but national advertising campaigns cost money precisely because they involve the consumption of natural resources by all involved.
And, really, throttling our electrical usage way back for 1 hour isn't going to help much, because power plants can't just be switched on or off in response to rapidly changing demand. In fact, scheduling your peak energy usage for Earth Hour is probably the smartest thing you can do!
... But turning on extra incandescent lights just to rub somebody's nose in it is just silly.
Dude, either turn your lights out, or don't do anything different, but don't go overboard just out of spite. It makes you look like a 2-year-old who was just told he can't have a cookie.
Well, all the people in that thread just helped the economic stimulus plan by keeping the electric companies' revenue flowing. I'm sure Obama thanks you very much for that.
Mother Nature made sure I took part, a freak winter storm knocked my power out for 3 hours on Saturday night.
oh, good christ, i hate these people. it even says in their own book to take care of the earth. they can't even read their own book right (surprise, surprise).
it says to be stewards of the land, not to rape and pillage it. we are supposed to take care of the earth, according to your god. get with the program.
Oh, that's real mature. If they had a "don't piss on the floor day", you'd piss on the floor, right?
@tracer: As has been pointed out, the Earth Hour idea isn't about actually saving energy for that particular hour, but simply an attempt to get attention for the movement. The idea is that it might make some people think the issues over and it will ripple out and save energy in the long run later. Have no idea if it actually achieves that, but that's the idea, anyway.
@Zoo: My sample group on fundamentalism is totally skewed to the opposite side of the spectrum as yours. I rarely here "dominion" and "stewardship" uttered in the same speech.
AGH!!
I just read more of that thread - majority of those Rapture Retards seem to be Australian
I'm so freaking ashamed :(
I thought Fundies were more commonly found in the Southern States of the U.S (no offence to anyone there)
They've spread!!
I just read more of that thread - majority of those Rapture Retards seem to be Australian

Shit! They've spread to Australia now?
That's not good at all...
Well at the very least they don't [yet] have the sort of political power over here that their American counterparts do...
The entire fucking thread is filled with this bullshit.
The whole thing has to be a poe. They're all like "I have freedoms so I'm going to use all the electricity I want 'cause I'm a fucking American" as if showing your support for keeping the Earth going is unamerican.
opposite day (well hour) for fundie eejits!
It's one thing to disagree with it, but it's another to deliberately do the opposite.
maybe the bitch wants to invite "persecution" - just for the extra jesus points!
more and more I get the impression that the tards on RR are trying to out tard and out fundie each other!
They seem to think they earn more Jesus time if they can out do their fundy friends.
@ Tallyho
You mean like a fundie not only turning on all of his lights, but also killing his neighbors -- who are a bunch of atheist liberals anyway -- and turning on all the lights in their houses too?
That would make Jesus weep for joy for sure.
god _wants_ us to destroy the environment, why else would he have given us the possibility of wasting power at a time like earth hour?
now i'm getting the point of those fundies...
"And Jesus spake unto the Thistlonians, 'Thou shalt turn off thy lights when thy leaveth a room, and thou shalt unplug thy computer and monitor from the wall socket after using it to searcheth for seductive, unclothed women. Thus speaketh your so-called Messiah (although personally, I'm more of an idea man).'"
Thistlonians II:2-3
In a perverse sort of way, I get the "Don't wanna." i think it's stupid, and lazy, but I kinda get it. But the "At the mere mention of conservation, I will run every appliance I can get my hands on, and then drive to the store in my hummer" just baffles me. I mean...why? Above and beyond coming off as a spiteful cow, do you enjoy high power bills? And would it really kill you to pull back a little? nowhere does it say in the Bible, "Thou shalt rape and pillage the earth, leaving nothing for thy children." look up the definition of the word "steward" and then tell me God wouldn't be pissed.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
