Possibly the only way to reverse course on this, would be to rescind governmental and employment benefits regarding marriage and family status. Some think that the push for homosexual marriage was to get homosexual partners on employer based health insurance plans, for example. If such incentives to get benefits based on family status are gone, then perhaps few homosexuals and others would bother getting married.

And perhaps if we eliminated the tax exemption for religion, then perhaps few fundies would bother foaming at the mouth about who gets married, or Obamas birth certificate, or god is smiting us with ebola, or singing whatever loony tune is popular today.
It's just uncomprehensible how some people are so much concerned about others' private lifes. The only thing that comes to mind is that they don't have a life of their own.
BTW in my country there's an anecdote about such 'moralists':
A man calls the police on a case of un-social behaviour, a policeman arrives at his flat and asks what's the problem.
The man points to a window in an opposite block and says: "a woman in the opposite block seduces and defiles the neighbourhood by going naked around her flat".
The policeman answers: "but you could barely notice anything at such a distance and the curtains on her windows are closed!".
To which the man counters: "but if you climb on that cabinet and look through a spy-glass you'll see it all!".
OK, legalize gay marriage in all 50 states, ensure that benefits are not based on family status, and we'll see what happens.
And, why the hell would you even want to do that? Unless you're a total dickhead, that is...
Face it, same sex marriage is yet another lost battle for the religious right. Just like prayer in school, they'll be whining about it 30 or 40 years from now and impotently trying to change society back.
In other words, you hate gays so much that you're willing to screw over EVERYONE who's married to make sure they don't get anything.
Consistent, I suppose. But you're still being a mosntrous asshole.
You Filbert (which I'm thinking is appropriate), it doesn't work that way. Your slippery slope would anger a lot of straight Christian couples as well. It wouldn't surprise me if this brain fart of yours actually went through, they would be the first people to be hot under the collar.
So, you want to eradicate marriage? Interesting viewpoint...
In Sweden, we don't have health insurance plans, we have tax-funded healthcare. The care you get is the care you need. Sure, you can buy yourself more expensive care, but everyone is entitled to the basics.
A lot of couples live together in marriage-like relationships for decades, and they are seen as next of kin by the government. The only differences between married and unmarried couples are the inheritance laws, the laws on what is whose in a split-up, and some tax laws.
Lots of homosexuals and others (whoever they are supposed to be) still bother getting married in Sweden.
Or you could introduce a proper healthcare system like every other civilised country on the planet and then it wouldn't matter whether you were married or single, gay or straight, young or old, rich or poor because health care would be free at the point of use. But such an idea appears to be beyond the average Americans comprehension.
Not everyone uses a marriage to get government benefits, moron. Some people actually want to do it to commit themselves to their partners. And so what if they did do it for the benefits? Straight married couples do that, too.
I have a great idea!! Let's make marriage so unapealling that the gays don't want it! Then surely it will be saved! What could go wrong?
Seriously, this is stupid even for a fundie. The only outcome of giving marriage less benefits is that less people will feel the need to marry, you know, including straight couples... Of course then this guy will get to whine about moral decay, and how people no longer marry.
So, basically: apply a scorched-earth policy to the entire institution of marriage - effecting EVERYONE, not just gays, but also straights, and everyone currently married or hoping to get married - just to spite those dastardly, grody faggots. How very Free Republic.
Conservatism is a well and truly mental disorder.
Actually legal recognition for marriages should be abolished. In order to gain those special rights you have to define who is eligible for them. Currently we say that one man and one woman, one woman and one woman, or one man and one man are eligible. But why are their relationships any more valuable than another form? In order to have marriage you have to exclude somebody. True equality would therefore come only if the legal institution of marriage were abolished.
With the legalisation of marriage equality in Colorado, Nevada, and West Virginia, you are now in the minority of states. 27 to 23.
If this were ever seriously proposed, let alone implemented, every straight married couple in the country would vote the clowns out of office. It'd be the largest landslide in the history of electoral politics.
Confused?
