(During a schoolboard review of the biology textbook "Asking About Life.")
Speaking to the board, Zimmermann said he had been approached by his son and other Farragut students (who he said are also his Sunday School pupils) who were upset about the implication that Christian beliefs are myths. In the ensuing board discussion, it became apparent that several board members, including Buttry, Robert Bratton, Sam Anderson, and Patrick Richmond, were sympathetic to Zimmermann’s sense of grievance. Debate quickly moved beyond the semantics of the word “myth” to broader concerns, with Anderson declaring, “I personally believe that there has to be some intelligence in the design of life, and no science teacher would ever be able to convince me different than that. It didn’t just happen in Walden’s Pond.”

Oh, so it's wrong to say that your mythology is, in fact, myth but it's okay for you to call mine fairytales and leave it at that. (Nevermind that most members of my particular branch of paganism don't take our tales at face value and instead choose to examine them for various messages and meanings our ancestors were trying to tell).
Having to eat and breathe through the same orifice, supporting the weight of the entire upper body on the vulnerable, precious lower spine, inverted retina's, useless remains of primitive bowels that can get infected and kill you, ...
'Intelligence in the design of life' my arse.
"no science teacher would ever be able to convince me different"
Good, then keep your beliefs out if the science classroom!
I thought Tennessee already had this trial in the 1920s.
Get over your persecution complex. No one is trying to undermine anybody's religious beliefs; they just don't belong in science class, where we only teach things for which we have scientific evidence. There is no commentary on opinions about intelligence being behind the origin of life, or the lack thereof.
Argument from incredulity. You shouldn't be anywhere near a schoolboard with that childish a mindset.
Also it never ceases to amaze me how easily the faith of the devout can be shaken. "Genesis is just a story !?!!?!" <collapses into jelly>

I'm soo with you on this one. I often choke on air, stupidly enough. I guess it's excess saliva going down or something, but suddenly I choke and can't breathe. My husband just looks at me like I'm stupid. Veeery helpful...
Intelligent design - yeah right!!!
solomongrundy, I'm with you too. Nobody in Europe would voluntarily say such stupid things.
Gravity is just Intelligent Falling.
I personally believe that there has to be some intelligence in the design of life, and no science teacher would ever be able to convince me different than that.
Then why the hell do you care what's being taught in the science classroom?
"I personally believe...." I suppose that any false belief you have, cant be explained by science because you simply will not accept the explaination. You should go back in time where you can be with fellow believers who thought lightening and thunder was the rumbling of gawds. I mean...who needs meteorology?

Then what the fuck are you doing interfering in the reviewing of the science curriculum?
Scientists are not out to destroy your faith. It's just that your faith makes claims about reality, and they are demonstrably false. The fact that learning about reality disproves your faith is an accidental result of science, not its main purpose.
If you on't want to be wrong, stop believing wrong things.

Thank you Mr. Zimmerman. Now, the first item of real business is...
Zimmerman, would you be upset about an implication that Muslim beliefs are myths? Why not?
What happened to Mr/Ms Buttry's first name?
Suck it up, buttercup. As a Pagan, I've been told my beliefs are myths, I'm a delusional retard, and that my gods are demons. You can't handle the implication (not the statement, the implication) that your beliefs aren't The Absolute Truth?
Grow up. I'm sick of dealing with you overgrown toddlers. Adults who whine about reality not conforming to what they want to believe deserve no respect.
Dang, my grandson goes to that school. I know his parents will make sure he has a good science education, but I'm sending them this old blurb so they can find out if any of those members are still on the school board.
Confused?
