There are some who may feel that religion is not a matter to be seriously considered in the context of the weighty threats that face us. If so, they are at odds with the nation's founders.
Freedom requires religion, just as religion requires freedom. Freedom opens the windows of the soul so that man can discover his most profound beliefs and commune with God. Freedom and religion endure together, or perish alone.

Bullshit. You don't need religion to have freedom, I don't get the connection.
Prove there is a soul. No one communes with a god, they only think they do, ie they are deluded.
Mitt, you have to face the fact that you were born into a religion that was spectacularly at odds with the nation's founders.
It took a lot of years and a lot of litigation to make it conform to the Constitution.
From what you said in your speech, I can only conclude that you yourself oppose the Constitution (under which you serve) and are seriously at odds with our nation's founders.
Why would anyone vote for a president that is totally fucking ignorant of his own country's history?
Hey, Mitt, fuck off back to Mormonland and do some vicarious temple work for dead people. I'm sure they'd appreciate you more than the real world.
Religion requires freedom -- Yes. Freedom to practice any religion you may choose, and even the freedom not to follow any religion is a good thing.
Freedom requires religion -- FAIL. Ultra Fail. Did the Dark Ages teach you nothing?
Freedom opens the windows of the mind so that humanity can discover reality and dispense with the need for God. Fixed it for you.
Oh, and as for that supposed relationship between freedom and religion, you'd think that Mormons would have learned something from their own history as a persecuted religious minority.
"There are some who may feel that religion is not a matter to be seriously considered in the context of the weighty threats that face us."
I'm with you Mitt. Religion is one of the greatest threats there is to peaceful society. That's not what you meant? Oh, then piss off turd-burgler.
Erm... Freedom requires a prescribed set of beliefs and rules that must be adhered to on pain of punishment? What dictionary is HE using??
(Course, depends on what he means by religion, but I bet he's talking about the "only true" one...)
Ohhhh yes. Keith Olbermann did a lovely deconstruction of the whole thing on his show, Countdown tonight.
He lost my vote long ago when I realized he was a religious nutjob. I don't mind religion so much, but what he said (and has said in the past) tells me his religion matters more to him than running the country, no matter what he says. That whole "freedom requires religion" part isn't even the worst part of it.
But go see Keith's video on the whole deal. He says it much better than I can - because he can be much meaner than I can without being nasty.
/shameless plug
EDIT: Rats. Apparently MSNBC doesn't have the video up yet. Maybe Crooks and Liars does, or possibly YouTube, if you can find it.
Mitt, the planet Kobol called. they're missing one of their idiots. they're recalled you.
PS Don't forget your magic undies.
Shut up, Mitt. I think if I didn't believe in some evil, vindictive baby that mass murders and punishes people who don't believe in him, I think I am pretty damn free.
I can wear mixed fiber clothes and eats mah shellfish.
The First Amendment, the Treaty of Tripoli, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams all say you're dead wrong, Mitt.
And as a bonus, I'll throw in such freedom-loving religious states as Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Which is, of course, why you don't want gay people to marry, rape victims to have the option of an abortion and blasphemers to be shot, right?
I'm sorry, Mitt, but that statement doesn't work both ways. I'm fairly certain that religion has never brought freedom. *coughthemiddleagescough*
I hope that he doesn't get elected.
Shorter version of that entire speech: "Dear Christian wingnuts, don't hate me because I'm a Mormon. Join me in hating secularists instead. And rest assured, if elected I'll cater to you just as slavishly as any Republican."
I can't believe they compared that to JFK's speech (shorter version: "No, I don't fucking get orders from the Pope."
Confused?
