Furthermore, in response to previous attempts at defending an "it's cultural" viewpoint, here is my take on the slavery is abolished so women's submission is likewise able to be abolished in our current culture: just because we have abolished slavery, does not mean it was wrong. The atrocity of slavery was the cruelty of the masters toward their slaves. The Bible does not condemn slavery, nor women's inequality, it does however clarify the importance of a master being just and kind. The same is found for women, the Bible clearly commands men to love their wives and it dictates that they are the head of their wives, where as women are told to be submissive and quiet. It isn't an association with the cultural views of that time to follow these Biblical ideas, it is cultural, however, to downplay the role of the Bible in everyday life as well as to make theology and Biblical principles out of pagan tradition. I choose to not follow cultic ideas found in culture, and take truth straight from scripture.

All this does is prove the Bible was written by men who made up their own rules and tricked people into following them by claiming that the rules really came from God.

Ah! Another whiny, preachy, wet blanket of a fundy (I assume) male who can't stand the thought that some women just don't want to be submissive and quiet.
So a vagina makes women inferior...how exactly?
Oh, right. Because a culture that treated women like cattle wrote the Bible...that's right.
So you don't find anything at all sickening about the notion of owning people ?
I suppose it's a mindset you have to have in order to accept fundamentalist religion. God evidently sees nothing wrong with owning you so, hey, why can't you own somebody for yourself?
I could have sworn this one was posted a few months ago...
Anyway. Aomin, I'd like you to introduce me to someone who is a good, willing slave. Whose heart's desire to work long, backbreaking hours for no pay, with no rights, under a master with a superiority complex. The reason masters were cruel was because if they weren't, the slaves would just run away. Slavery and cruelty are intrinsically linked.
As for women being submissive and quiet - why would God give women the same intelligence and needs as men, then tell them to shut up and do as they're told all the time? That sounds more like the decree of say, a man from 3,000 years ago then the ultimate creator of everything.
Deborah, Esther, Ruth, and Mary Magdalene, you lose Amigo. Why would any woman want to be a fundie Christian and have to put up with these ignorant bigots putting their fear of strong women in God's mouth?
Yes, there's a whole lot of disgusting in this post. A whole lot.
just because we have abolished slavery, does not mean it was wrong.
Actually, we abolished slavery because it was wrong, and we were one of the last western countries to do so.
Aside from the slavery & sexism apologia, I found this little tidbit interesting:
...it is cultural, however, to downplay the role of the Bible in everyday life as well as to make theology and Biblical principles out of pagan tradition.
Do you even realize how many ideas Jewish and Christian theology borrowed from their pagan neighbors?
I'm guessing the answer is "no".
"I'd like you to introduce me to someone who is a good, willing slave. Whose heart's desire to work long, backbreaking hours for no pay, with no rights, under a master with a superiority complex. Delete the underlined portion and you have me.
I'm not in any way defending this guy, I'm defending consensual slavery. This is something that has no religious basis and is based on very different mind-sets from your own.
However, to enable you to continue blanket bashing, I will simply add an addendum to every time you say slavery. The addendum will appear as thus: "slavery[the non-bdsm slavery, that is to say, the slavery that sucks]"
;) Remember fellows, watch your words.
Wait, what century do we live in? The concept of slavery in the Biblical times was VASTLY different than perception most people have of slavery. Slaves were treated with decency, respect, and given proper food and treatment because they usually could do something the master couldn't do.
And the Bible condenms fish-eating or Pork, for that matter and many things that we don't take seriously. Let's use COMMON SENSE. Is it moral to treat people as objects?, moreover, if slaves and women are objects and second-class inferior beings, why are they supposed to be Christians?, in which sense are they going to follow the same moral guidelines, if they're not supposed to have the same advantages and to be in a position to fulfill it?, It's a matter of CONSISTENCY. That's all folks.
Slavery (the non-consensual kind) is wrong! People were never meant to be owned! If you like slavery so much, why don't you become MY slave? What? No? Then shut up!
Women are people too-the whole "quiet and submissive" crap came from PAUL, not God. It was Paul's opinion, not God's commands. If God REALLY wanted women to be silent little doormats, They wouldn't have created them (the women) with at least as much intelligence, desire for knowledge, as many needs, talents and as much imagination as men. If God really wanted woman to be submissive, Eve would have been created from Adam's foot bone, not his rib (implies equality and companionship, never subservience)! Explain that, aomin, why don't you?
Confused?
