/I'm Christian & I don't HATE gay people.But the more I'm pushed on to accept gay marriage,the more I'm opposed to it./
Give me a break. I'M Christian and I can say with a straight face that I don't hate gay people and mean it, because I DO support gay rights. I DO actually have friends who are homosexual and I want them to be happy and treated with equality and acceptance. I do want all fifty states of this country to get their act together and allow homosexuals to marry. And no, in case you were wondering, nobody "pushed" me to accept gay marriage. If anything pushed me, it was my conscience and common sense.
/Change doesn't happen over night. Sometimes it takes centuries for change to occur./
True, unfortunately.
/But when it does happen, it's the right time./
African-American slaves fought in the Revolutionary War alongside the colonists. After the war ended, that wasn't the "right time" to free them? African-Americans fought in the Civil War and they did indeed become free afterwards, but it would take practically another hundred years for their right to vote to be enforced. When is the "right time" and who are you to decide what is the "right time" for anything? You're nothing but a spoiled rotten brat who probably has all her rights handed to her on a silver platter, who never had to fight or struggle for them.
/Gays have to approach this as an outsider would coming into a new group. The group was there long before you were & they're happy with how it is./
Hate to break it to you, Megan, but homosexuality is not new. Homosexuals have been around since the dawn of man. They've been *GASP* living among you and you've never even known it. Alexander the Great was bisexual. Oscar Wilde was gay. So was King James of KJV Bible fame. Ancient Greece tolerated and accepted homosexuality. Just because homosxuality was covered up doesn't mean that it wasn't there. Let me correct you: homosexuality was there long before you were and homosexuals are happy with how they are. YOU are the one who insists on butting into their group and making rules for them.
/If you want to cause change you need to wait until the time is right/
And again, who are you to decide which time is right? If everyone waited "until the time was right," women wouldn't be able to vote or work outside the home. Blacks wouldn't be free citizens. Interracial marriage wouldn't be legal. #818482 said it perfectly.
/or you'll find resistance./
Oh, so it's their fault that people are bigoted. Their fault that people can't mind their own business. Their fault that people are self-righteous hypocrites. Your blame-the-victim game sickens me.
/Why does America have to be like the rest of the world?/
Good Lord, not only is she homophobic, she's xenophobic as well. Well, to answer your question, Megan, why not? I'm not saying that America has to be a complete clone of Europe or Asia, but learning from others would be nice. Just think, we're all members of the same global community. We all each have our own strengths and weaknesses. If we took good ideas from other countries and found ways to incorporate them into ours, maybe we could improve this country. Other countries have learned from us, so why can't we learn from them? We share because we care. :D
/We're America...not Little Japan or Little France./
That's right, we're America. We're an incredibly diverse country composed of hundreds of ethnicities, religions, and cultures. America has never had one defined culture, or at least, not one that hasn't been influenced by dozens of other cultures. We're an immigrant country with all sorts of different people. Deal with it.
/If you don't like what was decided -leave./
So what's your view on Obama, Megan? Besides, if you don't like that a few states in this country have legalized gay marriage, YOU leave. If you can't accept that this country holds dearly the rights of free speech and dissent, of the value found in differing opinions and outlooks, and of the value of equal rights for citizens, YOU leave and go to a country more suited to your primitive views.
/If another country accepts gay marriages, why not move there? Because you would prefer to stay & try to force people here to change to what you want./
You know, I could make the same argument for religious fundies who want to turn this country into a virtual replica of Saudi Arabia, only Christian. Megan, unless you failed history class, you might want to remember that in the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson wrote down that Americans are entitled to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Why should homosexual Americans have to move to another country to get married? Why can't they get married in their own country? Especially since one of their country's core values is equality for all citizens. ALL citizens, no matter how different they are from you.
/If we're not ready, we're not ready/
YOU'RE not ready?! You're not the one waiting for years to safely come out of the closet without worrying about being made an outcast. You're not the one waiting for years to legalize your relationship with your loved one. You're not the one waiting for years to adopt a child. You're not the one waiting for the day where you won't be seen as a freak, but as a normal person who just happens to not be attracted to the opposite sex. And you're whining about how YOU'RE not ready? Cry me a river, you selfish, heartless scum.
/-& pushing for change doesn't make it come any faster./
Then how the heck do you think African-Americans and women got rights, then? Contrary to what you might think, the government didn't just "let" them have rights. They pushed and struggled and bled and fought for those rights. Your ancestors fought for the right for you to type your demeaning nonsense on a computer. Your ancestors fought for the right for you to say whatever you want without worrying about pleasing your male relative/husband. As you've said, change doesn't come quickly or easily. People HAVE to push for it, otherwise it'll never happen.
/People who don't agree with you aren't morons-they're people like you./
True. I wish you would heed your own words, Megan. People who are different from you aren't worthy of disdain and ridicule based on that fact alone - they're people like you. Homosexuals aren't abominations - they're people like you, who just happen to be gay. They're PEOPLE. They're American citizens. Thus, they have every right to be treated as such.
/I'm straight./
Good for you. So am I. I don't mind being straight (and given the appalling treatment that homosexuals receive, I'm thankful that I am), but I don't use my sexual orientation as an excuse to bully others.
/It's great./
Oh, you made a rhyme! How cute! Yeah, I suppose it is great, Megan. It's great that you're not part of a minority group that is so widely hated and despised. It's great that you feel that you're so superior to the said minority and feel the need to demean them and their struggle to have the same rights that you take for granted. *sarcasm*
/Get over it./
Change will come whether you like it or not. Homosexuals WILL obtain their rights, regardless of whether or not it is the "right time." YOU get over it, you disgusting, bigoted waste of oxygen.
