I have heard it said and truly believe there is no such thing as an athiest. Put them in a foxhole or in the direct line of fire from Evil Muslims and watch how quickly they become UNATHIESTS. This quote was attributed to an Army chaplain during WW2, I think. It caught on because it's cute and falls within the realm of silly sayings. Similar to "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition."
Even with context, they are meaningless but they sound profound as if containing hidden truths. But,it's just playing with words.

I'm an atheist and I did a tour of duty in Iraq. I don't ever recall "converting" when the rockets were bearing down on me.

My mother (not a religious woman) recently underwent major surgery when there was a good chance she wouldn't survive it. I saw her the day before and was passing on news: when I told her a relative was praying for her she just smiled and shook her head. Proof (at least to me), that you can face death courageously without God on your side.
Incidentally, she survived the operation, is undergoing chemotherapy and feels very well most of the time.
It is typical for the religious to cling to an old myth like this.
In reality, foxholes (and all other dangerous places) have just as many atheists as anywhere else. I know dozens of soldiers who are atheists and have been under fire from "Evil Muslims."
It is sad that "Sandy" misses the irony of this whole thing - if belief under pressure meant god was real, what about Islamic soldiers....?

I hope you come back to check on this thread because thank you, thank you, thank you for your service. I don't agree with the war, but I support whatever the troops actually there want 100%, as opposed to what the politicians here just bloviate about it.
Oh, and wishing a God existed to save you is not the same thing as actually believing in one (remember, you can't spell "believe" without "lie.")

I have never served in the military, but I have friends and family members who have been in combat, and none of them would agree with Sandy. A just god wouldn't permit war.

Nobody receives much attention in my country for being atheist; it's devout Christians who get the attention over here. "You mean you actually believe in those ancient stories?"
There is no religion in a foxhole, I highly doubt that you would have time to say your prayers while having to react to people shooting at you.
That phrase has been real popular since WW2,,,with Christians. Like most Cliches it is an unfounded assertion and was debunked within months of wars end.
Christian churchs were very alarmed by surviving soldiers returning with their faith shattered by the horrors of war. As we've seen by many veterans posting on this site war can certainly confirm most doubts of a loving God.

On the other hand, I have been an atheist on a submarine during a flooding casualty, watching the water rush in, and been damned sure we were going to die. But i never prayed. Or crossed my fingers. Just kept on with our immediate actions. So, even for a stupid opinion, you’re wrong.
