Atheism is not confined to atheists.

No he's right. Atheism is the lack of a belief in deities. This being said, everyone lacks a belief in certain deities, such as the extinct ones like the Norse or Greek or Egyptian. No one believes in them, therefore people are atheistic to them. Atheists just go another step and are atheistic to all deities.
I guess he would also say that Christianity is not limited to Christians, where, of course, atheism really means "everything I disagree with" and Christianity means "the things that I like". Which, of course, helps one to selectively blame atheism for every bad deed done by Christian (since teh "atheistic influence" made them do it) and accredit Christianity for every good thing done by a non-Christian. He's got an excellent little racket set up there...
Uh... yeah it is. That's kind of the point.
Otherwise, why bother with labels for this kind of thing?
As Philbert Macadamia has so foolishly and carelessly blurted out:
Yes, atheism is a religion despite all our carefully worded denials. Since it is a religion, Edward is correct. It is not confined only to atheists.
We atheists worship Athe, Master of the Universe and Beyond. He , in his capacity as an all-powerful, almighty, omnipotent etc. deity cares not one iota for us, his followers. And we're not too crazy about him either. It is not hate, exactly - more like indifference and apathy. But, we have nicely-printed membership cards and decoder rings.
Those who do not have the cards or rings cannot rightfully be called atheists but are allowed to follow his path, the Drunkard's Walk.
As is written in The Athe Book, "Whenever two or more of you gather in my name, thou shalt speak only in polysyllabic jargon about science-y subjects. There is no open bar, thou cheapskates.Get your own drinks."
Confused?
