Two leading voices of the Republican Party's evangelical wing visited Rock Church on Friday for a forum aimed at recapturing some of the movement's political momentum.
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee urged Christians to get involved in politics to preserve the presence of religion in American life.
“I think this is one of the most critical moments in American history,” Gingrich said. “We are living in a period where we are surrounded by paganism.”

Oh ... Paganism. So we're going back to an era of toleration, philosophy and respect for deep thinkers? Terrible, that. Soon we'll have monsters like Aristotle, Livy, Lucretius and Marcus Aurelius walking amongst us again. Oh, the horror.
Yes, Newt, yes you are, and THERE ISN'T ONE DAMN THING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
When are these people going to realize that identifying themselves with further and further extremes is not going to increase their mass appeal?
The Republican Party is NOT the Fundie Party, but it sure seems to act like it sometimes. :-/
What era of American history has not been critical?
How is it that Pagans, less than, say, about 5%, are surrounding 82-85% percent of the American population?
god dammit Huchabee...I've had enough of your shit.
the guy sounds like some nut job radical preacher you see on those TV sermons.
on second thought he basically is.
and the idea of "president Huchabee" is mortifying.
XFD
Hmm let's see...
74% of America is Christian.
1st amendment gives Christians the right to assemble and worship in peace.
Virtually all of America's presidents have been Christian.
If 1st-3rd century Christians, who had to meet in secret to avoid being thrown to the lions were here to hear you say that, they would kick your ass.
Well, I thought it was funny...
Oh wait, he wasn't joking.
Obviously, we pagans can take all the Christians despite being vastly outnumbered because our magic still works. Ever since Nietzsche killed Jehova, Christian magic has been downright pathetic at best, if it works at all. That's how they can be "surrounded" by us.
Hail Eris, etc.
My fave chaptet title from the book 'Redneck Boy in the Promised Land, The Confessions of Crazy Cooter' written by Ben Jones?

They have excellent strategists!
No, you are surrounded by mainly Christian countries. Last time I checked Canada and Mexico consist of mostly Christians. So does Europe, New Zeeland and Australia. Maybe not the Asian countries facing US, but I don't think they are pagans either.
Is there a thoroughly Pagan country?
Newt Gingrich needs to get the fuck out of the public eye, and soon. Preferably painfully, or shamefully. Just remember: based on what he's been saying, head injuries won't affect him in the slightest.
Just keep talking that crazy talk and nominating fundie wackos like Palin, Newt, because it's really helping our side. Just keep it up, okay? Here, kitty, kitty....
And just when I was thinking that the Republican party was the party of inclusion.
Well, at least they still like homosexuals, atheists and Muslims.
Right? Right?
Hey, Newt, as long as you want to preserve the presence of religion in American life, do you recall what your Savior said about remarriage after divorce?
For those of you who may not remember Newt's fierce Christian morals,to put this in perspective, in the '90s, he left his wife for his mistress, and served her with divorce papers while she was in the hospital with cancer.
Maybe they are reallllly BIG pagans, y'know, and thus so few can surround so many.
Or Newt is off his meds again.
If this were a Pagan society as Newt claims, then why do we have to fight so much to get the pentacle placed on the graves of Pagans who died in the service of this ass-backwards country?
Besides, if that hypocritical piece of shit really cared so much about biblical values he wouldn't be a serial offender in the divorce/remarriage category. He also displayed typical sanctimonious christian class by serving his wife with divorce papers while she was in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery. I'm pretty sure Jesus would have frowned on that.
[stunned silence]
Paganism?
Translation from Rethuglican double-speak to English:
"The barbarian is at the gate and he has us surrounded!"
Hmmm... the translation doesn't make sense either. Just goes to show, stupid is as Stupid does.
"urrounded by paganism"?
Seriously, Newt?
ironically, pagan means country dweller, it's basically latin for red neck, you know, your base.
I'll take the pagans over your lot any day of the week. And no, you're not surrounded by paganism. Last time I checked, your country was overwhelmingly christian, so knock it off with that persecution complex.
Huckabee urged his listeners to get engaged in public life or their views won't matter.
"Politicians aren't interested in pleasing the public," he said. "They're interested in pleasing voters."
No irony here
Well, I vote "Meh" (at least to this snippit, DRTFA)
- For those complaining about the use of "paganism," remember that a long time ago, it was used to describe anyone that wasn't Christian, which is how it is used here again. I don't feel offended by that.
They are making a call to get religious groups more involved with the political process - isn't that what america is about, majority votes and we try to compromise? I have often wondered if some of the people spouting off on this thread have considered how "nut job extreme" they look?
Yay, me! Worship Zeus or I'll send a lightning bolt up your asses.
But really, paganism? Whachoo talking 'bout, Willis?
You know, Newt, I really don't think someone with your marital history needs to be preaching morality. Thrice-married, cheated on both your first wives before trading in the new model. And there was the whole thing with you being involved in an affair that involved only oral sex so you could claim not to have had sex with the woman.
As they say on another site I visit, IOKIYAR -- "It's OK if you're a Republican."

Yeah, it pretty much IS the Fundie Party; they've infiltrated the host organism and seem intent on sucking the remaining life out of it. Or as Rumsfeld once said: "The insurgency is in its last throes" and it's made up of a bunch of "bitter dead-enders."
Only 20 percent of people ID themselves as Retardlicans these days, and of those that do the majority has got to be fundies.
@Isn't this America?

I would be inclined to agree to a small extent except they are getting a tax break and government support when the rest of us have no such advantage.
Yeah, but at least the pagans don't divorce their wives on their cancer bed and then fail to adequately support their daughters.
So I guess my argument is "Fuck you, you intolerant scumbag."
Oh, no! The vast Christian Majority is being oppressed by a few people who don't believe exactly what they believe! What a horrible catastrophe!
Fuck off, Newt. This country was founded on religious freedom; the fundies who can't stand anyone not being just like them are the ones who are wrong, and you're sitting there and feeding them.
If "paganism" is the Fundy Republican Word Redefinition for "people who are realizing how much of a bigoted clusterfuck our party has actually become" then yes, you are surrounded.
I may have only taken an intro level political science class, but I recognize collapses when I see them, and the Republicans are in the middle of one. This is what happens when you steadily colonize a party that doesn't originally care about social conservatism with religious ideals. The people who were there to begin with that aren't religious wackjobs get tired of those who are eventually, because there's no government that can be both small enough to cut needless spending and big enough to make sure nobody aborts or assfucks.
At least Huckabee was a little more up front about his religious convictions, he spoke openly in front of America during his race to leader of his Christian beliefs (more open in front of religious crowds, true, but some honesty)
Gingrach says two different things to the two different audiences. To the general public and non-religious crowds he's a stupid Republican promisising adherance to the constitution but in the religious circles he's a full on Bible-thumper promising a return to Biblical God-inspired America ( You know, the America that NEVER existed and has no place within the constitution)
Confused?
