Yeah, about that particular verse (I forget the exact sura and verse, but it's easily looked up). Seems like a lot of the hard-core Muslims take that verse exactly at face value when it's pretty clear that Muhammad meant wife-beating only as a last resort. (What do you suppose would have happened had he tried to do that to Khadijah, anyway? I think she'd have laid the smack down on his punk bitch little ass... Prophet or not, Muhammad married a woman who was older and tougher than him and easily his equal. It is truly astonishing how little Islam acknowledges that.)

@Brian X: It's also astonishing how little fundie Christians acknowledge that Jesus picked Mary Magdalene to inform his disciples of the Good News and that she and the other women were the only ones who stayed with him during the Crucifixion. It's astonishing how little fundie Jews acknowledge the strong women in the Old Testament like Deborah, Esther, and Judith.
Khadijah was also Muhammad's first convert to Islam and SHE proposed to HIM, not the other way around. And yet fundie Muslims still insist on treating women like cattle and playthings.
