*gays in the military*
If he changes the policy, we are probably going to see about 25% of the military leave as soon as they can. Many of them will be officers and NCOs. My husband is retired from the army, but if he were not, he would be submitting his retirement papers asap. We will certainly discourage our son from following his dad into the military.
I won't go into detail here but when my husband was a commander he had to deal with several problems caused by gay soldiers. One of them involved the attempted homosexual assault of another male soldier.

Guess what? Heterosexual assaults in the military are just as common, if not more, than homosexual assaults.
And teh gayz... they're already out there... driving on your roads... serving your food... breathing your air...
"We will certainly discourage our son from following his dad into the military."
Yeah, cos of all the dangers inherent in joining any military organisation being chatted up by a dude is by far the greatest.
You people are fucked in the head.

You'll encourage your son to try alternative paths like going to college instead of going overseas to get his head blown off. Tsk tsk tsk. What is society coming to?
Whoever quits not to be near a gay man is not going to be regretted. I prefer an army with fewer, but better men.
Also, I've had a chat with a bigoted US soldier; according to him, there is no heterosexual assaults because 80% of accusations made by women are lies and most of the others provocated it.

And how many problems did he have to deal with involving heterosexual assault? Oh yeah, that right, the military doesn't deal with those .

Good! We'd be a lot better off without such pathetic, cowardly bigots in the military. If they're so scared of their fellow soldiers, how can they deal with the enemy?

Of course it is! If you get shot by one o' them heathen A-rab snipers while yer out doin' the lawd's work then you git straight to heaven, but if a dirty homosexualist gets his hands on you and infects you with the ghey, then God's got no choice but to torture you fer all eternity!
If 25% of the military does leave it, then that will probably be a good thing, because that 25% is probably made up mostly of fundamentalist Christians who have permeated the military and try to force religion on everyone they can. It is a government-run institution so should be as secular as possible.
Yeah I can see why your macho husband is afraid of a homosexual.
And why there is no heterosexual assault in the military... no, never.

I actually hope this is true. Right now, in the Navy, advancement rates suck due to overmanning. A 25% decrease in personnel would make it easier for the rest of us to advance.
Granted, that's a horrible reason to be in support of Civil Rights, but I'm only human.
sherrimae, here is your probable support of gays:
- Getting your hair done? Chances are that there is at least one gay man working in the salon you are frequenting.
- Bought any clothes lately? Most likely they were designed by a gay man
- Jewelry? Same as clothes,
- Shoes? Probably gay too!
- Accessories? Gay as hell too!
As a woman, I bet you depend on gays every day to look your best.
Oh noes!
When MY husband was a commander he had to deal with several problems caused by heterosexual soldiers. One of them involved the attempted sexual assault of a female soldier.
The military will never be able to cope!
"I won't go into detail here but when my husband was a commander he had to deal with several problems caused by gay soldiers."
I'm guessing your husband's "problem" was getting the smell of gay soldiers' cocks off his breath before he went home to visit you.
I think soldiers would be a bit more concerned about other things such as - gee, I don't know - seeing their comrades' arms and/or legs being blown off, seeing their comrades killed right in front of them, seeing the mutilated corpses of children killed in a suicide bombing, being wounded themselves in combat...
But, of course, all of that is mere child's play compared with the utter horror of knowing that one of your fellow soldiers is attracted to men. It's really inspiring to know that our soldiers have such good priorities. /snark
It's not like ending "don't ask/don't tell" is going to cause all of the gay men to suddenly turn flamboyant and start hitting on the straight soldiers, dye their uniforms pink and prance around like queens. Or are you unaware that there are gay men in the military right NOW, and have been for a very, very long time? Ruh roh, what if your husband caught teh ghey while serving with them and doesn't even know it? Better go check to see if he has any Madonna albums, quick!
Rapture Ready's knowledge of homosexuality is pathetic.
Sure, leave the military now, and live like a king on a few months of unemployment benefits. Your family will salute your strength of conviction.
I was in the Army for 12 years, and there was at least one gay in every unit I was assigned to.
Hm, I was until recently a member of the Deutsche Bundeswehr aka german military. Since 1999 Homosexuality isn't a legitimate reason for beeing discharged and sexual identity is protected by the law, even in the military. So, if you are mobbed because you are gay, you can complain to your supperiors (or directly to a special ombudsman in the parliament) and chanches are very good, that the mobbers will be disciplined. The same for cases of sexual assault on either gender.
But guess what, never ever in my 12 years have I heard about anyboddy leaving, because there were gays in his unit. Most gay men remain still (partial) in the closet, but some (like me) have kept silent about it, because sexuality in either form is your private matter. I only outed myself on a number of occasions, when someboddy in my unit was backbiting about "fags" and such. The reaction on their faces was priceless, because I definitly don't look the cliché. And most of them later told me, that they never really were homophob, but "just going with the flow, you know". I predict in another ten years it won't be a problem anymore.
So tell me, the US Army is much more professional than the Bundeswehr (in my oppinion at least), why do you think there would be such a fuss? Is the esprit de corps only build on homophobia? If so, then that is an entirely diferent matter...
Apparently, Americans are less patriotic, and less willing to fight for their country than, for example, Spaniards or Belgians. It seems that Americans will take any excuse to get out of serving their country, when Italians or Canadians don't seem to have any problem with serving along side homosexuals.
Why are American soldiers so uniquely cowardly and unpatriotic?
Confused?
