If you're going to use the word "courageous" to describe Tebow or Collins, I think it's more fitting for the avowed Christian athlete than it is for the athlete who publicly identifies himself by behavior that is contrary to the natural law but celebrated by pop-culture.

People tease diehard Christians because most of them are semi-secular Christians raised in a Christian culture. It's more like teasing within a family.
And most of the insults towards Tebow is more about his football skills and the insane amount of attention he gets than his outspoken religous nature.
And if a team passed on Collins few people would make a stink like OP is predicting.

Jason Collins is 34 years old. The average age to retire in the NBA is 36. I don't think he needs to worry about that much.
Tim Tebow, on the other hand, is 25. Aaron Rodgers, 29, is just as religious but he doesn't get the same adulation from fundies nor the same criticism from others and he won't be leaving the NFL or the Packers any time soon because unlike Tebow: 1) he's a great quarterback; and 2) he doesn't go bothering other people about his religion. Life lesson there, Tim.

He more or less says that it is self-advertising, and that praying should be done in private so that you don't show yourself to be an insincere pratt.
Ray Lewis was very outspoken about his religion and was always thanking god in every other sentence. Then again, he didn't push his religion on the media like tebow does. Also, he's a hall of fame linebacker who was worthy of any sportscenter time as opposed to Timmy who's a mediocre quarterback on a good day.

Yeah, it takes real strength of character to loudly and repeatedly expound on the fact that a peson is part of a religion shared by 80% of his countrymen. And of course, true courage dropping to his knees in a gaudy, tacky display of "prayer" any time he does anything right. Yes, clearly a black homosexual could never understand Mr. Tebow's plight, yes?
There's just one difference, Tim Tebow has played three season, Jason Collins is now completing his twelth season. Actually there's two, Collins is a ok player, while Tim Tebow simply isn't very good .
I know no one gives a shit about hockey, but Shane Doan of the Phoenix Coyotes, the most doomed franchise in American pro sports, is an insanely hard worker, great leader, has turned down better contracts because he believes in his team, and is also a pretty serious Christian. Like writing bible verses on his stick serious. He doesn't talk about it at all, let alone make silly public spectacles of his religion. Kinda like what Jesus asked people to do.
I liked Tebow early on, he smashed through shit like a crazed bull. He clearly did not have the ability to compete in the NFL, and his public religious displays were off putting.
I feel bad for Collins, he didn't want to be the first. Athletes that came out after their careers ended thought we'd have gay athletes in all sports decades ago. So good job on being that big of hateful bigots.
Seriously, what's up with the Tebowlatry, Matt? I could understand hero-worshipping someone who actually did something heroic, or at least useful for society (saving lives or improving them, for example), but he's just some professional athlete, an entertainer paid way too much to run after an oddly-shaped ball, and according to people who care about Murikkan Football he isn't even very good at it/can't stick to what he's paid to do. Making obnoxious displays of your religion when 4/5 of your country share it and your holy texts cautions against that very thing doesn't make one a hero, it just makes you an ass.
Actually you lot have elevated Tebow to a level of skill he doesn't possess, he hasn't been kicked to the curb, he's merely at the end of his peak performance and is benched so better players can take the field. Like your religion, it's leaders and your Godspeak politicians you lot overrate performance based entirely on wishful thinking or imagined future performances ignoring all existing faults and actual performance.

I have no idea what kind of player Tebow is but I do know that Jesus was kind of down on those making a big show of their faith.
Also, homosexuality has been observed in about 1500 species. By definition, it's entirely natural.

Funny, since my favorite show has one recurring queer character who isn't a joke or dead. Charlie Bradbury is a fucking miracle for a queer girl like me.
But Supernatural killed three queer characters in its first three seasons. One was an offhand mention of a murdered gay teacher. The second was Lily, whose psychic power killed through touch and killed her girlfriend. Lily dies first of the psychic children. Third was Corbett, whose death saved everyone and whose whole character was his crush on another guy.
Since then, explicitly queer characters are either Charlie or jokes. Implicitly queer characters are monsters or Dean Winchester.
The writers and text bait Dean's queerness and his relationship with the angel Castiel, but we all know that the likelihood of Dean becoming the first bi protagonist I've ever seen in mainstream American TV is next to nil.
So yeah, right. Queerness is /celebrated/ in popular culture.
