The voice belonged to Aris Bakhtanians, the coach of the Tekken team.
“The sexual harassment is part of the culture. If you remove that from the fighting game community, it’s not the fighting game community… it doesn’t make sense to have that attitude. These things have been established for years,” Aris stated. He then noted that making sexual jokes at StarCraft players would be inappropriate, so it’s unfair for anyone to tell fighting game fans they can’t viciously mock women. …
“That’s what you’re trying to do to the fighting game community and it’s not right,” Aris continued. “It’s ethically wrong.” This may be the first time in the history of video games that someone had said that removing sexual harassment is ethically unjust.

This kind of shit needs to be elliminated in video game culture more generally too. I once had someone sexually harassing me in the switch version of Mario Kart 8. They don't even let you write your own text in the between-race messages to other players, but this shithead was changing his nickname to send me lewd messages. It's kinda sad that there are so many people like that out there.

The fighting game community? Sounds like an interesting crowd. I’ve never understood fighting for leisure in the first place, at least not full contact fighting like boxing where the object is to hurt another person. But physical fighting via fake game characters using a keyboard sounds pretty wuss. Poindexter level wuss. And using sexual harassment in the process kind of doubles the wuss factor.
Perhaps these supermen should go out and do something that demands personal courage, like pissing their name in the snow.

I imagine nobody does this because they’re scared to be harassed themselves and….in the case of cops….get treated like Serpico, lose their jobs or worse.
However; If the harassers can pull crap while staying anonymous and untouchable, why not good people. Surely a good person can learn all the hacking and “stay anonymous” tricks of the trade.

Y’know, I think society is way too hung up about sex, and I’m all for sex becoming a part of everyday life and activities, but not harassment .
Start a new fighting game league, and make it clear in the rules that sexually explicit taunts and behavior are allowed. Let anyone who’s interested walk into it with eyes open. And leave it as part of THAT league, so anyone who DOESN’T want to take part in that kind of behavior won’t have to deal with it in the other leagues.
Don’t force it on EVERYONE.

Sorry, Spuki. I prefer to be silent, because being loud in crowds and such isn’t really my style. As I said above, I don’t like to play multiplayer games, especially online multiplayer games, and it’s because to do so I’d have to deal with other people.

I’m sorry Spuki, but you’re outta your deph here. There really isn’t a single “gamer community” just like there isn’t a single “nerd culture”. Each game, each genre, each series has their own fandoms, often with completely different vibes and rules.
I for one simply don’t give a whole fuck about what goes on in the incel infested FromSoft fandom, I’m a Paradox gal and the games they release, as well as their fandoms tend to be as progressive, as they are inclusive and rational. I’m sorry if this dissapoints you but no, I will not go publicly yelling and nagging and bleating like a cretin about a bunch of circlejerking dipshits, just because they are such and exist within some broadly defined “gamer” culture. It shouldn’t be necessary, it shouldn’t be demanded and it’s not gonna do anything else other than give those more masturbatory fuel in the form of a “triggurd librul”.

Agree with Skide on the fragmentation of the gamers communities. They think they are tough guys, because they can combo moves in a given game. They lack the self-awareness to tell themselves that they are not their characters of choice.

No. I was refering to the fake-fighters who have the self-image of a tough “he-man” simply because they can move a joystick with their oh so ”supple wrist” (Pinball Wizard reference). I assume that the sexual harassment mentioned in the OP has its origins there, at least in part. I’m not aware of chess, bridge, or darts players or bowlers who mistake their prowess in their game with an equal prowess in their life.

Cultures change. Humans (at least the adults) move on. Roll with it, deal with it, fuckery doesn't get special dispensation or protection for being 'cultural.' It's just widespread fuckery.
